Recommend me some relatively modern PC games... - by lost_soul

Oh right, I forgot, goth texture packs is a sure sign that a game is mod friendly. RE4 modding scene, you have arrived.

Yeah yeah. I wasn't refuting the suggestion that RE4 isn't "mod friendly" (because I don't know); merely the implication that looking for mods is a futile endeavour -- because obviously they do exist.
There are also more comprehensive environmental texture mods, DX9 lighting mods, control mods to improve mouse input, etc. And hell, if you actually wanted "goth textures" in the game, you're presumably not going to get that in a console version of RE4.
(Of course, if the developers had done a half-way decent job with the PC port, most of that wouldn't be necessary, but that's a different issue.)

Sod the goths, I always wanted to play it as Michael Jackson and now I can :)
Having a Cube and going for PC version was bit silly. If this game was coded for PC from scratch, fine, but it was not and as such it actually looks much better on SD TV - might be lower res, but its a horror game and hit & miss texture packs really don`t help the atmosphere. Everything looks too clinical and jagged.
But ok, each to its own and hope you `ll have fun with it anyway - just saying, because I really loved this title. Not Thief Tier of course, but quite close. Was thinking about replaying it...bit scared it might`ve not stood the test of time though - the control scheme in RE5 really got on my nerves recently.

control mods to improve mouse input
You mean "hacks to add mouse input". The RE4 port was so fucking dreadful, that it didn't support mouse input at all.
Apply all of the high res texture mods and shitty bloom hacks that you like, the Wii release is the current definitive version.
The PC port based on the inferior PS2 version, rather the Gamecube original (which had superior models, textures, lighting, more dynamic and far less compressed sound). It inherited all of shit associated with the PS2 port, including FMVs rather than the original pre-rendered cutscenes.
The Wii edition has near mouse look aiming, far less annoying QTE sequences, extras from the PS2 version (sans the technical features of that gimped port), true 16:9 support. Basically everything the shitty PC port should've been.
My only complaints are the analogue stick sensitivity adjustment and that they didn't bother to include a rebalanced difficulty mode (the Wiimote makes the game a bit too easy at times for my liking).
Anyway, the PC community "patch" can be found here:-

It would be weird to try and play a game with only the keyboard. I was a keyboarder in Doom and Duke Nukem, but I had to change my ways in Quake.

The community patch that I linked to should include a mouse control hack.
N.B. It won't behave like proper mouselook, but like an emulated thumbstick. So whilst still more precise than an actual thumbstick, it won't be able to register your exact strokes because the game wasn't programmed for it. Still, better than nothing.
The results will probably be similar to this:-
<param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/SEPTGjrwmgg?version=3&hl=en_GB"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/SEPTGjrwmgg?version=3&hl=en_GB" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="349" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed>

Well obviously, both Duke Nukem and Doom aimed vertically for you to an extent. Quake didn't.

Yes it did but with the birth of TCP/IP gaming it was made a server side switch and as mouse gaming became more common, SV_AIM was generally turned off on most servers for balance reasons.
