Recommend me some smart/thoughprovoking movies or dark/sarcastic pieces - by Yakoob

You presumably read how no one actually fired a gun at anyone in this story, right?

Yeah, that Bobcat Goldthwait movie looks fucking ace. I've been jonesing for Freddy Rumsen's comeback for a while now! :D

So I've been catching up on some movies and looking for good recommendations in the category of smart/original/thoughtprovoking/engaging/mindfuck (tho David Lynch is a little beyond my threshold).
I expect you've already seen Terry Gilliam's
Brazil, right? If not: watch
Brazil. Avoid the US version like the plague, though.

In Bruges - it's funny and sarcastic and a bit dark. So, Irish hitman comedy. Scots hated this one, so it's definitely up your alley, Yak!* :thumb: The ending was beyond redemption, though.
Tarkovsky's Solaris - slow and meditative, but also brilliant.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind remains a classic slightly mind-bendy movie about bittersweet romance tinged with sci-fi, though you've probably seen it by now.
And of course, Children of Men was great. Surprised no one mentioned it yet.
*sorry Scots

We ought to have TTLG movie nights where somebody streams a movie and we join & chat about it. Not saying it could be done very practically with all the timezones, but if somebody is watching a movie on their laptop or computer, they may as well stream it and throw up a link. I think I'll try that next time & see how it works. Edit: Or not. Guess it doesn't matter if it's legitimate for me to watch.

You apparently think it's normal for a nine year old to bring a gun to school and accidentally shoot an 8 year old girl.
And if this 9 year old wasn't able to differentiate between reality and being surrounded by a culture that glorifies gun violence (and thinks that's "deep"), then it's obviously his fault. Or his parents.
And me, I must be fucking stupid to infer that one might have anything to do with the other.
Muzman on 28/2/2012 at 16:28
I would not have put it so harshly, but in essence; yes.
I certainly don't think it's normal. I can't ever recall it happening before. It at least doesn't happen at anything like a frequency to call it normal. The authorities certainly think it's pretty serious.
Mostly I'm not sure what this has to do with a black comedy not exactly aimed (erk) at kids.
Perhaps (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Supper_%281995_film%29) poison and bludgeoning would be more palatable?
How about (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heathers) bleach, dynamite, cow tipping?

Just think of all the innocent third-party contractors who were slaughtered at the end of Star Wars! NOT COOL MAN.

I was thinking of Heathers too. Only that Heathers had an ending that turned against the violence that had gone on before, while acknowledging the fascination that simple sort of conflict resolution has. And that's what made it a good movie about the subject.

How could I forget Harry Tuttle? What a wonderful movie indeed :D

It's been mentioned a few times, but I honestly didn't like it. Two hours of Goerge Clooney stumbling around a ship. Can we get to the point already?
(But then again I watched it when I was like 13 too, so maybe a re watch is in order)

I have mixed feelings about Eternal Sunshine, but Children of Men was definitely a great one too.

That would be pretty neat, set up Vent or Skype conference. Works better if we make it a goal to scrutinize / make fun of the movie as much as possible. But I agree, not very practical.
Damn. College Shooting. High School Shooting. Elementary Shooting...... kindergarten shooting next?
