When I first did this Hlaalu quest, I chose to go to Tel Aruhn to look for a miner, and was directed to the slave trader, who sold me a miner. The miner said he'd meet me at the Shurdan Raaplay mine- but he never did, though the quest registered as completed.
This time I again tried Tel Aruhn, but even though the miner was in the slave pit, and I was told to see the slave trader, the relevant topic did not appear in the slave trader's dialogue box. I gave up and went to Gnisis, where I managed to find a miner.
So, my question is, is the way you resolve the quest randomly determined? And will my new employee meet me in the mine, like he said?
It's not terribly important, but I am curious.
Also, I tried to free the Dren Plantation slaves, but every time I unlock the bracers with the key I'd pilfered, I get attacked. I can't remember how I did this before- I tried a high chameleon spell, and Command Humanoid to lead the slaves away first, but it hasn't worked. Is it worth keeping at it, or should I just kill off the overseers? They are House Hlaalu, so I'd rather not.

Everyone except Dren may be killed even if you are house hlaalu. They also have quite decent equipment for easy fights. As for escaping with the slave the only I have found to do it is to kill everyone who attacks.
