cougars
Don't you mean coyotes? I haven't seen any cougars anywhere, nor have I really met any opposition from the wildlife.
Just tamed my first stallion btw. :)

You don't see cougars...
UNTIL IT'S TOO LATE!
They're bastards.
The first (and last) you'll know of them is the "RAOWR!", shortly before your horse is disembowelled and they're using you as a chew-toy.

So far cougars pouncing on me have missed barely and then they get a hot dose of lead soup.

Cougars are nasty. Quick, and if they get you twice it's all over.
Of course, a semi-auto shotgun solves that problem quickly.
Is it just me, or are the hunting challenges a very, very odd progression?
Rank 1: Kill 5 man-eating coyotes.
Rank 2: Kill 5 utterly harmless bunnies
Rank 3: Kill 5 man eating wolves....with your knife.
Rank 4: Kill 5 boars and 3 armadillos.
I'm expecting it to end:
Rank 9: Kill 5 rabid bears with your bare hands.
Rank 10: Kill 5 Pigeons.

I believe challenge 9 involves killing a couple of bears with your knife (they kill in 1 hit). My roomate's gotten through all of them already, and said that one was the hardest.
In other news, anyone notice how useless bait is? You use it in an area when you want a specific animal to show up. For instance, if that area has foxes you want foxes. If there are boars around, you want boars (the map is marked with animals so you know where they're found). Instead, you always get a crapload of coyotes and wolves.
And a cougar (I got jumped by one the very instant the bait animation finished).

Yeah, the hunting progression is mad. Challenge 8 is to kill2 bears, at least one of which with your knife, then challenge 9 is to kill a "Legendary Jaguar", which isn't really that legendary.
Challenge 10 is to kill 3 "Legendary" creatures, again, a bit of a cakewalk compared to killing a bear with a knife.

Yes, the challenges are bizarre. I'm still trying to find my elusive fifth bunny, and not having a massive amount of luck trying to stab wolves in the face with a knife, either.
I'm great at picking flowers though! This makes me feel like the most unintentionally gay cowboy since Richard Hammond donned a Stetson and a pair of aviators.
On an unrelated note, surprised the daily mail haven't picked up on
Irish admiring the horse cock
.

Are you looking for bunnies during the day? You just won't see many at night.
I find it somewhat amusing that a cougar will race halfway up a mountain to eat my face, but will not so much as sniff a rabbit on the way to me. The wildlife is definitely player centric.
Have completed all of the challenges now. The two bears with your knife was by far the hardest - and I am very lucky it autosaves when you complete a challenge, and after killing my second bear with a knife, another one promptly appeared out of nowhere and took my damned head off.
I haven't spend this much time terrorizing the local wildlife in a game since 'The Oregon Trail'. Still, loads of fun.

I love the, what I call, CQK (Close Quarter Kills) in this. I was taking out the Colonel's forces in Chuparosa (the mission where your shit gets stolen and you get beat) and when I went into the room to kill the main guy, I did a roll toward him, popped up and while Dead Eye was on, I did the shotgun-to-the-chin move and the fucking chandelier came down straight onto him for added carnage to his death
Speaking on the wildlife:
If you're looking for good hunting grounds, follow the river north of Tall Trees as far as you can go. I've been here about 15 minutes looking for beavers. I've found 3 so far...but in that time I also have
2 bobcats
1 fox
9 wolves
4 grizzlies
and 2 horses...getting back out of here without a horse is going to be rough. There's also been numerous deer, rabbit, and birds that I haven't been bothering with.
