Alan Wake or RDR? Hell, for a few dollars more I'll get both.
Just as summer has arrived, too

Does anyone know how the size of the sandbox compares to, say, San Andreas? I'd love to have a current-gen San Andreas at some point, but I'm sort of worried that with the increased level of detail a Liberty City-type metropolis is the best we can hope for, with little or no chance for three miniature states with cities and surrounding countryside.

As much as I like the "classic" Westerns, I prefer the cynicism and reflection of the revisionist films.
Eg I rate The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance as one of John Ford's finest in the genre, easily as good as The Searchers and My Darling Clementine.
P.S. I regard Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West is one of finest films ever made.
Go watch 'The Proposition' asap. Best western ever. Raw and realistic, totally awesome. It's Apocalypse Now with cowboys set in Australia.

I have to say I really liked Ray Winstone in The Proposition as well - his character was more nuanced than the usual Ray Winstone character.
I wouldn't go as far as to say The Proposition is the best western - it's almost impossible to compare with lots of other westerns, simply because it does something very different, but it's definitely up there with the best.

I already own it on both DVD and Blu-ray, incredible film all around. Nick Cave's terrific score was all but the icing on the cake.

If you liked the score, you should check out the music he wrote for
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. I loved the film itself as well, but I would hesitate to recommend it to you without knowing your cinematic tastes a bit better.

Terrible movie imho, series of well made scenes that just goes nowhere.

I definitely wouldn't say that The Proposition is the "best Western ever". There's so many great ones and the genre definitely stretches all gambit of different tones and styles.
Off the top of my head, some of my favourites:-
Once Upon a Time in the West - Sergio Leone
For a Few Dollars More - Sergio Leone
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - Sergio Leone
The Searchers - John Ford
High Noon - Fred Zinnemann
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance - John Ford
The Wild Bunch - Sam Peckinpah
My Darling Clementine - John Ford
Ride the High Country - Sam Peckinpah
Shane - George Stevens
The Shootist - Don Siegel
Red River - Howard Hawks
Unforgiven - Clint Eastwood
Fort Apache - John Ford
Three Godfathers - John Ford
Open Range - Kevin Costner
Cop Land - James Mangold
...
All ranging from terrific to very good. It's simply impossible and honestly rather foolish to jujst outright say that one of the better contemporary films of genre is the best.

I had forgotten about that film. I actually did see that recently and rather liked it. Casey Affleck and Sam Rockwell were superb in that film I have to say, definitely two rising character actors with promising futures (eg Rockwell in Moon).
I remember that Cave himself appears towards the end singing a ballad about the two key characters.
Dammit, I feel like rewatching Wings of Desire now after all of this Nick Cave talk.

Many many great films in that list Eva, I agree with most of them. I really like Rio Bravo as well.
