Is there some backstory here I'm not aware of?

There's lots of backstory you aren't aware of. Unfortunately I am legally prevented from explicating on it.

if bobby kotick is the gaming exec equivalent to hitler, then danny bilson would be stalin

I reckon all of those types think they're Hitler and Stalin, but they're actually Mussolini.
(I dunno. I just want the goss. Send it all anonymously to some game goss site and then happen to link to it when it goes up.)

I've had a weird relationship with the Red Faction games. I avoided the first out of spite for it not being Descent 4, but when I finally played it a few years later I really enjoyed it. Red Faction II had just come out, so I rushed out to buy it... and then promptly conducted my first-and-only return-a-new-game-for-store-credit. It was horrible. I gave Red Faction Guerrilla sideline glances for a while before deciding to give it a shot, liked it, played it a bit, then didn't play it again for something like two years. When I finally did give it a proper play (starting just a month ago) I loved it, and now consider it a contender for my "favorite games" list.
Still, I'll wait for the Christmas sale to pickup Armageddon. At the current exchange rate, 50 Euros is just way too expensive.
And the only* plot continuity between the Red Faction games is...
In RF1 you're rebelling against an evil corporation. The earth military assists you in the end and you free Mars. In RF2 you're a renegade earth-based super-soldier who is hired by the Red Faction to bring the fight to Earth. (I dunno how it ends, I only played two missions.) In RFG (50 years later) you're fighting against the earth military forces that assisted you in RF1 to once again free Mars. (I don't know how it ends, I'm still playing it, taking my time.) In RFA (another 50 years later) there's something about the Marauders (who are the pirate remains of the evil corporation from the first game) doing something terrible to force the population of Mars underground where you encounter nasty monster dudes. ... and it contains an homage to Descent. Damn them!
* Actually each game is essentially stand-alone with only tenuous plot connections.
