The official site ((

Tripwire Interactive today announced a new World War II PC game, Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45. Tripwire will deliver its award-winning first person shooter via Steam, Valve's online content delivery system. The original Red Orchestra won Nvidia's "$1,000,000 Make Something Unreal" contest. Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45 is a standalone follow-up, built on Epic's Unreal EngineTM 2.5, that introduces new gameplay and features.
Red Orchestra lets players choose from 28 infantry weapons or crew one of 14 different fully-realised vehicles on the Russian Front between 1941-45. The combination of roles across more than one dozen maps, based on real-world locations and battles, allows Red Orchestra to finally achieve its goal of delivering a full first-person, WWII combat simulation.
In its Christmas 2005 issue, PC Gamer UK touts that Red Orchestra is “showing awesome potential,” and that “We already knew the mod was genius, but this is even better” as part of its two-page preview of RO: O41-45.
"Digital content delivery is the future of gaming, and we are very excited to be a part of that future" said Tripwire Interactive President John Gibson. "Working with Valve to release the game over Steam allows Tripwire to remain independent and keep control of the games content and development. This allows Tripwire to continue to offer our fans the same uncompromising level of realism, authenticity, and gameplay they have come to expect from Red Orchestra while continuing to innovate and push the boundaries of the military FPS and simulation genres."
"We're pleased to have the winner of the 'Make Something Unreal' mod tournament bringing their full-fledged game to market on Steam," said Jason Holtman, director of business development at Valve. "This shows that a talented and passionate group of developers can take a game from concept to public distribution outside of the traditional publishing and funding model and deliver it to over 6 million customers."
Watch for information on the Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45 release date on Steam. Further details will be made available on (

Looks awesome! :thumb:
EDIT: From reading more about this, this seems to be some sort of mod. Not sure yet if this is even single-player... That would suck.
EDIT 2: Yeah, it's multiplayer-only game, at least for now: (
http://www.redorchestragame.com/forum/showthread.php?t=75&highlight=%22single+player%22) - and I got all excited :(
EDIT 3: So it's basically a remake of a UT 2004 mod, the original of which is here: (
http://www.redorchestra.clanservers.com/) - anyone played it? Reading the interview linked from the RO forum about the initial plans for the stand-alone product, they were aiming for a single-player game, but as it got too ambitious, they scaled back and decided to release first an online-only game.

I've posted about this before.
This new game is a full, greatly enhanced version, of the UT2004 mod which won the Make Something Unreal competition. The prize was, eventually, a full UT2004 engine licence and a UE3 licence.
This new game is using the UT2004 engine (whatever it really is, UE2.5 or something) and they now have full access to the engine rather than having to mod UT2004. There will be many more weapons and lots more vehicles (there were only about 10 types in the mod version).
I don't know how you could have a SP version of it since it's mechanics don't really suit SP. 98% of the time a single bullet kills you so it would be very frustrating in SP unless the enemy aim like StormTroopers (from Star Wars. STs in RO would be rock hard).
It looks great, and the RO mod is still great fun. If you have UT2004 DL it and join us to get a flavour of what this full game is going to be like.

This is what made Operation Flashpoint so great and immersive: one shot and you're dead, like it would be in real war action. The description on 3DGamers was so promising, and I was disappointed to learn it's online-only at this point.
SubJeff on 3/1/2006 at 21:18
Nah, Flashpoint wasn't that bad. I remember being fired on by loads of guys and surviving runs that would have been impossible in RO. Against humans anyway. It only takes one bolt action wielder who knows how to lead the target from miles away and you are dead. Come and try it. If you have UT2004 it's free. If no, get UT2k4. It's really cheap now.

I really am not a fan of multiplayer games. Just don't see the appeal, sorry. I'll wait for their single-player game, which they say is still forthcoming and by the sound of it should be great.

The problem is the two times I downloaded this and tried it, there was a single server running it and that server was always full.

Disable the "standard server" options, and make sure you're running the latest version of both UT and RO. Looking over the server list now, there's at least 20 or so servers active.

And that way you might find yourself on a sever that runs the quirky maps as well as the normal, realistic ones. Pistol battles can be fun. And occasionally there is a community bolt action only night which is great fun and a real test of your long range rifle skills. Check the RO mod forums for annoucements.

Well, I can't speak for Orchestra since I haven't really played it, but Air Bucanners isn't exactly perfect. It's fun and imaginitive but doesn't have a really long lifespan; at it's heart it's fairly simple, repetitive, and REALLY slow.
