To the last 3 posters-
The reason RO is so popular is its realism. There are no crosshairs only real sights (ironsights), there is no health, no medics or health packs, no bunny hopping, limited sprint, and all the weapons are accurately modelled in terms of rate of fire, range, accuracy, number of rounds in magazines, reload time and there is no on screen "number of bullets left". Vehicles are accurately modelled too including tank armour and location of ammunition boxes - shells bounce off tanks if they hit at the right (wrong!) angle, armour is weaker on the sides and back, tracks, engines and ammunition boxes can be targetted.
In short it's not an arcade game in the same was as most WW2 games. It's tense and tactics are very important. The gameplay is very different to the usual.
Damnation and Air Bucs are good (objectively - Damnation is meh to me. It's incredibly linear and I find it boring) but the realism of RO swings it for many people.

There are several things you cannot do in RO that you would be able to do in real life, yes. But they are due to computing power and engine limitations and if you are going to take that attitude then you will never be happy.
The point is that it is a tactical realism shooter and not an arcade fps. Personally I wouldn't want you, or whatever bore did that picture, on the same server as me anyway.

Just because it has a retail box doesn't mean it also has a single player mode.

Does anyone even still play this? It seems most of the playerbase are rejects from BF1942 who got banned from their favourite servers.

Last time I played it (around the time I last posted in this thread) there were always a few full servers. My net connection is intermittent and not set up properly at the moment or I'd play RO more.
Tis a shame it didn't last because it had such great potential. It is very good, but you need the players. Back in the mod days it was really fantastic. The mixed tank and infantry maps (that are huuuuge) are really great to play with a good team. Fear of tank is great in RO, and the relative weaknesses and strengths of weapons and vehicles is essential knowledge.
RO not being even more popular is a testament to the dumbing down that everyone wants and loves. We get given a game with some quality mechanics and content but oh no lets go play something more flashy. I don't get much time for games these days and the more I think about it, the less I care.
