Hey all! I've played a very little (so far) of dishonored and have already noticed a couple of references to Thief! Reading a journal proved that some anonymous person referred to the "whalers" as "gaffers". I know gaffer means an old man, but it's relative proximity to taffer makes me think it was an intentional reference. There are a few others but I don't want to spoil them :)
The game is fun though... Very fun. awesome ability to disable features like objective markers/HUD display so you can create a very immersive stealth action experience. I hear "true ghosting" a la thief days is possible and there is an achievement called "ghost" where you don't trigger any alerts (although you can still knock out to earn it... it's just no kills/alerts).
Anyways, just my quick two cents for anyone on the line about the game. Very solid, very fun, great developing. Can't wait to get back into it after my classes!

I played a few
hours of Dishonored yesterday, late into the night, in a dark room.
The similarities, in-jokes, references, tributes, figures-of-speech, gameplay tricks, plot points, opposing factions, cultural flavor, time period, and just generally the overall package are SO Thief-y that I think of the game as "Thief 4" in my head. It's like a parallel-universe Thief, not very far removed.
In fact, I seriously wonder if T4's latest delays/development woes aren't because this game came out (and had some LGS blood developing it).
For anyone who has doubts: this is a
good thing. The game is nothing short of remarkable and amazing.

I couldn't have put it better. For a while I literally forgot I was playing Dishonored and that this wasn't, in fact, an alternative Thief universe.

Man, I'm absolutely jealous of you all. If my good-for-nothing 360 was working (The one that I got for a few bucks, which had a broken DVD drive), or I had enough money to finish my system (I finished the main system, but need a new GPU and HDD), as well as afford the game ATM, then I would totally be playing right now. :(
At the very least, can you all recommend it in big bold letters? :D :cheeky:

While I have my eyes open for Thief references, I did pick up one to Deus Ex. The first number combination in Dishonored is 451. In Deus Ex (and it's prequel, Deus Ex: Human Revolution), the first code you will encounter is 0451. This itself is a reference to System Shock, I believe, which features 451 as the first code as a reference to the book (and later film) Farenheit 451. So, Dishonored has a reference to a reference, which is a reference to a reference. Referenception. :weird:
At the same time, I'm really enjoying the setting and gameplay it has to offer. It looks and feels like something Looking Glass would make. Honestly, I initially planned on using this as a placebo until Thief 4 arrived. But now I realise it's so much more...

No, it's just a reference to an LGS thing, having that code. It's not a reference to DX having the code.

There's also another one, quite a bit later in the game. When you're dealing with the assassins there's a training area where they quote the Thief 1 training dialog "In the next room...blah blah...try to avoid being seen" word for word.
And yeah, this game plays a lot like Thief. Loving it so far.

Several of the guards use the word "choffer" as a derogatory term. Not quite as close as gaffer to taffer, but still...similar enough to maybe be a reference.
I've seen some others not mentioned here, I think, but I can't recall them at the moment. Will try to remember and post here when I come across them.
Similar elements though, maybe not direct references:
* The mechanical tallboys, with their vulnerable tanks on their backs...remind me of the mechanical things in T2 with the fire in their backs (boilers?) that you put out with the water arrows. (Why can't I remember the names of those things???)
* The party mission at Lady Boyle's with the masks...reminds me of Life of the Party in T2.
* The chains, remind me of rope arrows (only you don't get to fire the chains; they're static)
* You can sign the guest list at Lady Boyle's party. There was something similar in Thief (maybe a FM I played...was it Calendra's Cistern maybe?)
All I can remember at the moment...

I'm really loving this game and it feels very much like the Thief genre to me, though I do miss having my BJ and light gem. It's difficult to tell when you're well enough hidden. I made a noise yesterday and the guard outside the door mumbled "..must have been rats." I know the game is full of them so it makes sense but it sounded SO much like the guards in Thief muttering about rats. :)

Well, as far as I know the mission with Lady Boyle was made by Purah, so I guess it's natural he made some nods to Calendra's Cistern since they both have similar plots. :p
