Regarding noisy surfaces... (Question) - by Hitokiri-san

I've started my second playthrough of Thief 2 and I decided to play on expert. While I was playing (and having a blast) I noticed that the guards didn't seem to hear my footsteps even when I ran right behind them. The only surface where they hear my footsteps is metal (and I think tiles too). I'm now at the very begining of the "Ambush" mission, and the same thing is happening, I can run right past them whithout alerting them. So, is this a glitch or am I not remembering correctly which surfaces are the noisiest?

Metal and Tile are DEFINITELY the noisiest and hardest to sneak on. Gravel can be a bit of a pain too.
Grass/Carpet is the quietest, I think.
Wood and plain stone are not 'bad'. Sort of in between. You can do a fair bit without being heard on those two - as long as you don't start jumping around. Still have to be careful. . .but yeah, they are not all that loud, either.

Wood and stone you're good to go but careful of the rest.

Thanks a lot! I was kinda worried that no one would answer... It's weird how when playing this game the first time none of these "problems" bothered me.

I think carpets are COMPLETELY silent meaning that you can jump and run around as much as you want and guards won't hear a thing.

Which isn't very realistic, usually there'd be wood underneath if it's not at ground floor level. The game also fails to take into account the same surface carrying noise to the floor below. Thief is ruined for me, it's unrealistic!
if you couldn't tell that was sarcasm I feel bad for you
My sarcasm detection is augmented.

Walking/running/jumping on carpets do make sounds but are not that noticeable if the ambients are loud. I can hear carpet footsteps with headphones on.

You seriously didn't understand that he meant carpets are completely silent
to AIs?

They can hear it. They just don't respond to anything that quiet.
