Uh, no. They don't respond precisely because they don't hear the player.
And that has nothing to do with you saying that you can hear your own footsteps on carpet, despite Gooby clearly saying he was talking about AI hearing the player.

Maybe it just depends on each guard's sensitivity levels?
I have not used DromEd much myself but I think these can vary from a guard to another...

I like how CoSaS: Mission X included soft metal in air vents. It seemed a lot more realistic than most metal in T1/T2.
