Remake, of the Thief Trilogy. - by Vancore

No, this isn't an announcment of some kind. Just a thought I've been toying with in my head and before it disappears forever.
I love the thief series, but it is a little old. If it was ever to be remade with better graphic's I would definatly rebuy the entire series, I would think most of us here would as well. In fact, I would like to see it go farther then just a simple graphics update, maybe something along the lines of what there doing (
http://www.blackmesasource.com/) for this game in just mod terms for all three of the thief games. That to me would be the piece of heaven I probably won't see for many years, if at all (Copywrite issue). Although knowing how strong this community of people is I can see that happening at some point but at the moment I can just dream a bit of what that might be like.
Gameplay wise it would be a bit different, wiser enemies, more space to move about in, more options, some things from thief 3 that worked like lockpicking. The story would basically be the same but hell, the story is like rewatching a good movie even if its the same movie. Since its a game though the story could be expanded upon in a remake, reinforceing the story thats already there and filling up loose plotlines from the original and you can't deny there has been some in the series. Of course some could remain ambiguous for the sake of some people (Was Garret falling for Victoria? Would you really want to know that or come up with your own conclusions?).
Other then that, it would be nice to play all 3 of the games with these improvements in them. Of course Thief 3 would have to change more to be like the first two while those would have to be improved using better physics and graphics... actually Thief 3 would need the former more as well now that I think of it. Actually Thief 3 would probably be the most changed out of the 3, from changing the openings to each mission to resemble the first two to fixing the way garret moves. Of course the sound for both wouldn't need to be changed much (The haunts in thief 3 would use the voice scripts from the first two though).
I guess the only thing that makes me a little angry about this entire thing is the fact that there is a lot of dedicated hard working people here and if it wasn't for the fact that the thief series was copywrited this dream could have already been a possibilty. Maybe not exactly the way I thought it out but in some form or another. Of course that remake could have sucked very badly too, but coming from a community that has already delivered so much grade A material its hard to think that it would. Got a lotta faith in you guys.
Well, as I said in the beggining this is just a thought I needed to get off my chest and I was also wondering if anybody else here felt the same way I did about the issue. If I was a rich man, if I won the lotto tommarrow, this would be one of those dreams I'd fund.

Deja-Vu anybody?

It is now an official rule of this forum that at any given time there must be at least 1 thread regarding either the chances of a Thief 4, remaking the original games in $ENGINE_OF_CHOICE, suggestions for a Thief movie, or the biggest failure(s) of TDS.

Then the community is overachieving, because at the moment we have 3 of those 4 topics going in the last 30 days. The 5th most common topic seems to be speculation about a relationship between Garret & Viktoria and the possibility of Garret getting splinters, and we have that ITT too.
But to answer the original post: Remakes of old missions are like remakes of old movies. For those who saw the original the remake has to be better without changing too much, or it's not worth watching, and that's a tough line to walk. I am thankful for the remakes of the missions that were in TG but not in TDP, since I have TDP and not TG. But most of the FM authors seem to like telling their own stories rather than retelling the old ones, and may of them are better than the OMs.
Expressing anger about copyrights won't get you far, as this community does not support the theory of "I don't think it should be illegal, therefore I won't follow the law." I'm not saying that you're saying that, I'm only saying that we've heard it too many times and that is how it starts.

We hadn't had a TDS bashing thread since a long time.

You see, I was right! The last post, in that thread, is already three days old by now.

Vancore, when we release (
http://www.thedarkmod.com), I hope, and I'm sure, that some people will actually re-make the original missions. Hopefully they won't get shut down.
It's not comparible to re-making a movie, the way that happens nowadays, where they change plot etc.
It's more like re-making the same movie in a 3D hologram so that you can enjoy the exact same movie, but in a more fufilling way than before.
They re-made the classic Doom levels in a Doom 3 mod - its interesting to see how they took the wacky old fashioned levels and tried to "explain" them with the sort of realistic level design that Doom 3 is known for.

Let me trumpet what Domarius is saying here. I truly hope that when the (
http://thedarkmod.com) is complete that the levels from the three original games (t2x included :D) are redone. I'm sure that it would take alot of work , but it would definitely be worth it!!!!!
EDIT: I don't expect the darkmod team to do them, but the rest of the fan community should step up.

That reminds me, I'd like to take this opportunity to formally announce that I'm remaking Thief in the Lode Runner engine.
