Reminiscing of the days gaming under DOS, Win9x and long dead genres... - by EvaUnit02

The best being Armageddon?
Nope. The best ever was Squish from the NES version of U4, if I remember correctly.

Anyway, it appears he'd planned two sequels to Loom, but according to interviews linked from the Wiki, no one was really interested in doing them at the time.
Oh wow, I never knew that.
That's an incredible shame. I always wondered why that volcano scene from the Sphere never showed up.
It looks like (
http://board.apeironstudios.com/viewforum.php?f=6) Chaos, the fan sequel, is still being worked on, so at least we may end up with that.

Oh, and another thing I miss: the Commander Keen series. I fuckin loved those games. I still seem to have 4-6 on here, though, and they run almost fine in XP.
Wonder if dude will ever get the IP rights to Keen... that would be sweet.

Sorry, but I have to vote 'Blade Runner' for My Favorite Adv. Game.
Beneath a Steel Sky gets my vote, there was just something genius about it that even LucasArts couldn't match.
First PC game I ever played was also an adventure game - Space Quest 2. I miss adventure games.
Fact of the day: PC gamer UK once accidentally put an entire adventure game on it's cover disc instead of the demo, but its name escapes me. I know this because I played the 'demo' to the end, wondering just when I'd get halted by the 'please buy me' screen, which never materialised. I suspect heads rolled.

Agreed. They are also trivially easy to run on DosBox (~5000 cycles does the trick). I'm currently somewhere in the middle of a replay of Keen 4, and planning to replay 5 and 6 after/

Ahh, Loom. Best 4 1/2 hours of adventure gaming goodness I've played (other Lucasarts games nonwithstanding).
I never knew it was planned as a trilogy. Granted, the ending wasn't exactly the feel good happy conclusion most people would expect from a single game. What with it ending with the entire world being ripped in two, and all the people unfortunate enough to be on the side of the schizm with Chaos being damned to eternal torment. But it's all good. You turned into a swan and found your mom. Fuck em. Game Over.
Anyway, I'm surprised Lucasarts didn't follow up with any sequels. I thought Loom was a critical success and sold moderately well.

I dug out an old k6-3 533 mhz laptop this weekend and installed Windows 98 on it. The battery still works! I tried the thief demo, but it didn't run so well...I remember playing Duke Nukem 3D on this thing like ten years ago. I wanted to put it online, but it has no NIC and i didn't have a PCMCIA wifi card handy.
I remember insisting on a laptop with a TFT display so I could run games on it. :) Those dual-scan laptop displays that were around in the "90s were GARBAGE! For those who don't know, they were extremely slow to refresh an image, so when you watched a video or played a game things would totally blur. I once played Doom on a 486 laptop, but it was hard to watch on the dual-scan screen.

Yes, Commander Keen is awesome. I'm on number 2 right now.

Heh. When you put it that way, it is kind of depressing, isn't it. In light of there being no sequel, I assumed you were just supposed to revel in the knowledge that Bobbin and Cygna would return to put things right again. But you've got a point.
While poking around Wikipedia, I found (
http://www.videogamer.com/news/telltale_wants_to_make_episodic_day_of_the_tentacle.html) this interesting article. Apparently, if the Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition does well, there is an increased chance of other Lucasarts adventure titles being picked back up. The article focuses on Day of the Tentacle, but it's possible that Loom could see a renewal as well.
Speaking of DotT, it and Maniac Mansion are two more simply amazing games. I was incredibly ecstatic when I found Maniac Mansion inside Day of the Tentacle. :D
Also, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. Great stuff, and I'd love to see more.

I'm probably about the only person in the world who loved Maniac Mansion, but didn't care terribly for DOTT. It was an alright game, don't get me wrong. But amongst the grand echelon of old Lucasarts adventures, I'd rate it near the bottom. I guess it just didn't feel enough like the old MM, and the initial disappointment deflated my enthusiasm for the rest of the game.
What I'd love to see is a true sequel to Full Throttle, or another Indy game done in the same mold as The Infernal Machine.

Really? Since I played DoTT first, I can't really speak on it, but maybe playing the second first helped me be able to appreciate both.
Then again, I'm a sucker for adventure games (which is strange, because I'm not that good at them), so that may be a factor as well.

There's another Indy game? I had no idea. Looks interesting from the article I found. Awesome that has Sophia Hapgood in it; I liked her character in Atlantis and wanted to see her again.
