Reminiscing of the days gaming under DOS, Win9x and long dead genres... - by EvaUnit02

The only downside I can think of to digging up an old copy of The Infernal Machine is that you probably won't be able to play it. From personal experiences (and a few links I followed up), it won't run well on anything except old Win98 machines.
It's a damn crying shame, too. There aren't nearly enough Tomb Raider types with heavy adventure game elements out there, and the world is that much poorer for the lack of them.

Indiana Jones and the Emporor's Tomb (PC/Xbox) was excellent as well.

Oh man, The Infernal Machine, I think I still have that on CD somewhere, LOVED that game, had a huge Indiana Jones phase when I was real young.

I never finished Infernal Machine, I hit what must be some sort of level geometry error near the end. I was at the bottom of a vertical shaft with the doorway leading out too high to reach (might have been able to jump to grip-and-climb-up height, but if so he refused to do the gripping).
Shame, I enjoyed it otherwise. The level with sudanese ruins was a cool variant on the usual ancient-egypt stuff, and it let you run hyenas over with a jeep, huzzah.

So I just wrote an entire post on how I got The Infernal Machine to work on XP Pro, then I realized that I was talking about The Incredible Machine. :p
That stinks, though. I'll probably get it anyway and try it, just in case. It'll be worth any headaches if I can play a good Indiana Jones game.

Wow...how did I miss these? Dang. I'll have to look into that one, too.
Speaking of The Incredible Machine, though, that's another one of the great games that I was fortunate enough to experience, though I was introduced to the series by The Return of the Incredible Machine: Contraptions, which had improved the controls and the interface (and possibly the physics) just enough so that the originals felt a little clunky. But they're still insanely fun and mind blowing.

For adventure games - The Dig gets my vote. One of the most atmospheric games I've ever played.

For adventure games, my vote goes to Grim Fandango. Though I did play Maniac Mansion on my old C64, and it was awesome. So was Day of the Tentacle. Then again, I'm pretty easy to please.

7th Guest + 11th Hour for me. Love those games. Each works just fine in dosbox also.
Also the Wingcommander games, XCOM games and the Mechwarriors as mentioned previously. Downside is that Mechwarrior 2 doesn`t work in dosbox. Being a windows game and all. And Mechwarrior 3 does work but under XP the AI does weird things (enemies flying up into the sky at random for example) and the jump packs on your own Mech dont work. And it crashes randomly. So grrr.

The DOS version is usually included on most Mech 2 discs if you look around. I had trouble with the Windows version; I think I remember running the DOS version from WITHIN Windows was more reliable than the Windows version even when it was new. And that includes the multiplayer version.
I should image my copies of Mechwarrior 2 to set up in DosBox. Using ImgBurn to create a bin/cue file allows full CD audio support ;)
