would borderland fit into that category ?
or maybe even the upcoming id game rage ?
borderland has some rpg elements in it (apart from the stupid 100.000 weapons) and rage should have non-linear missions (adventures).....
or dead space since it has this new thing everybody talks about: inventory.

Haven't heard about Borderland. Dead Space is more survival horror, I think, and one of my criteria for being an immersive sim is first-person camera. If we would take that away though, Alpha Protocol should also fit the bill.
On another forum someone mentioned Far Cry 2 could actually be put on the list.

you're right about dead space.
borderland is gearbox' new co-op or sp game, like rage or fallout in some post-apocalyptic future only buggy-racing is very popular or the only way of transportation. I don't know much more either than that it has some rpg elements.

I was really excited about this thread until I realised there wasn't a single sim game featured.

Remember, the game they make most comparisons with when talking about Borderlands is Diablo.

Matthew - "immersive sim" is a term coined by Kieron Gillen to describe games such as Thief, Deus Ex or System Shock.

diablo ? omg will it have loot jumping out of dead enemies ? 'cause then it doesn't fit into "immersive" sim.

Man, I love him and all (hence the location under my name), but that just sounds silly.

It sounds like what I just got blasted for speculating about in the "things to add to Thief 4" thread, adding real sim elements to FPS. These are all still solidly in the "first person" genre and don't want to get too deep into reality beyond the "here and now" (e.g., no working economy). Maybe "immersive first person" is a better term for them.
That said, I agree there's something of a little renaissance in the type. It's not quite the same aura of mystique with the games as back then, but it's nice to see the genre has legs.
