*UPDATED 01/25/11*
I've decided on my build! I'm going for a sneaky, thief-like assassin. Let me know what you think.
Race: Dunmer
Birthsign: The Thief
Specialization: Stealth
Attributes: Agility & Speed
Skills
Marksman - To me this an obvious choice.
Armorer - So I can always have my equipment in top shape (plus to fill an endurance slot)
Sneak - Another one that seems pretty obvious
Illusion - To me this is one of the very best skills in the game because of how well rounded it is.
Conjuration - This should help aid me in battle and well as provide a distraction against groups or tough enemies.
Alteration - This is an awesome skill. It allows me to unlock doors in seconds, have a powerful shield and alter encumbrance.
Acrobatics - It's easy to control, starts me out at level 25 so I can shoot while jumping. :)
I figure this build would be great because the following skills govern 1 attribute: Agility (2), Endurance (1), Personality (1), Intelligence (1), Willpower (1) and Speed(1). Leveling up armor should be sweet because I can repair right after every battle. What do you think?

I've been gobbling up all the recently released information about Skyrim and it totally got me itching to play Oblivion once more. I picked up the GOTY edition and am ready to go...well mostly. I need to figure out how I should play the game.
My question for you folks is this: What class did you enjoy playing? I've always wanted to play a Thief and steal tons of stuff, make mad cash and break into every home at night, but I've always doubted their combat abilities. Is it possible to be a badass and a Theif? Do you have to use daggers and bow & arrows? If I recall correctly the Thieves guild has a really nice reward at the end of it.
What about a Mage?
My overall goal is to play the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves guild storylines because they're just so damn awesome. But it's been ages since I've played the game and I'm pretty sure I've messed up and forgotten some information here.

Play with OOO.
If you're a thief, get alchemy and make lots of poison. Attacking from a distance with poisoned arrows and potentially running off and hiding is the best way for a thief to fight.
I always found mages to be better/more interesting to play. Whenever I tried playing straight fighter-types I got frustrated with the combat, moving too slowly and not being able to heal as easily. I found mages to be much more adaptable and able to punch way above their weight with the right tactics.

Recommending OOO for a first time playthrough may be a mistake. It cranks the difficulty up a hundredfold and he'll be a bit lost. Anyway, just make a custom character with whatever skills sound fun to you but don't pick Acrobatics or Athletics. They take forever to increase.
You don't have to use daggers or bows. Daggers are low damage/high speed and bows are great for sneak attacks. You'll still want a melee weapon to fall back on in tight spaces too.

The only two mods for Oblivion that are worth a shit:
(
http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=oblivionmods.detail&id=46) Level Slow (lets you slow the rate at which you acquire new skills)
(
http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11474) SM Plugin Refurbish (makes you do shit before the dlc quests start)
If you want to be overpowered, it's all about wood elf/assassin. You'll have sneak/bow/alchemy skills for stealth and whittling away people from a distance, and if you fuck up and get into a close range battle you can fall back on your blade skill. There's really no point using daggers if you have bow skill, since a good stealth character either avoids combat entirely or initiates it from a distance. The blade skill is only for situations where stealth isn't an option, and in that case you might as well use a sword that does some damage.

He did say he's already played the game before.

Same here, but I went a few steps further and downloaded Arena and Daggerfall, two games I've never actually played. Obviously they're super old and dated, but surprisingly still really fun. Hoping to play through the entire Elder Scrolls series before Skyrim is released in November.

I'm playing it on the X360.
I like the idea of creating poison arrows, coating an arrow and picking enemies off from a distance--but what about indoors?

I was specifically thinking of indoor use, since it's darker and easier to hide indoors, but now that I think about it, weren't enemies able to psychically home in on you once they'd detected you once in vanilla? I guess you could use low-power invisibility spell or potion to hide...

Does anyone know if OB will play on an integrated chip? 6150SE. My GPU died and can't afford a new one right now.
I played a Thief when the game first came out and found the stealth overpowered, to the point of it being ridiculous, so never finished the game.

6150? Not a snowballs chance in hell of getting a playable frame rate with that card.
