You DO realize that RE1 was essentially inspired by Alone in the Dark and predated Silent Hill by at least 4 years, right?

Yes. But, AFAIR, it was 2 years.
I just don't see a difference in horror factor between RE1/2/3 and RE4, they were equally scary for me (mainly because of the fear to loss my progress), but RE4 was additionally much more fun gameplay-wise.

I seriously don't get the love for RE 4. You open a gate and every damn villager attacks you at once so you go stand in a doorway and pull your knife to save bullets- hack dead hack dead hack dead- pickup stuff and look around with nobody alive to shoot. Plus the boulders suck crusty toes to outrun on a pc.

Well, any game may be described in such manner. Like, f.e. Thief: you hide and hide and sneak and sneak and blackjack and blackjack. Where is fun in that? :p

No. Everyone doesn't attack at once. You can and do hide to attack at your discretion. Not the same in any way at all. Sure, sure, some wait. Like store maniquins. Some in the distance patrol so the rifle isn't a complete loss. Still. The boulder is crap only to get through to something worth a damn like the red line in Max Pane. And the second one is damn near impossible. Lovely. I get to click as fast as I can on a button not even specified on pc version. AGAIN.

Resident Evil certainly has changed direction... Since this is coop, do you get a tandem?

Of course not the same, it's different games, but any game could be described in such manner that it would seem very unvaried and dull, while it's not.
Enemies don't attack you all at once in RE4, you can avoid them, areas are quite open and together with point hitting and weapon systems give opportunity for many tactical improvisations and styles. Also, you forgot to mention that RE4 has the best close combat ever and brilliant bosses, perfect economics and weapon upgrade system, TONS of secrets and battle tricks player learns eventually, lots of bonus content, large variety of game situations. It's the game that definitely doesn't show all its beauty from the start and has quite long learning curve.
But well, you probably don't know all that because you barely started the game. Anyway, the game's rating speaks for itself.

It takes 5-10 minutes to figure out what the numbers mean. The control is absolutely fluid once you install the mouse support patch and reassign keys to WSAD, Q-knife (5), E-weapon (6), LMB-fire (3), RMB-cancel (1). I don't know why you call the escaping from the boulder hard, it's not that easy on Pro, but definitely easy on Normal.

Umm... mouse support patch. That WOULD be helpful. And I was using ctrl for run as for ingame when it had reverted to enter. Dufus I am. Will give it another go. I'm still killing most everyone in an area by backing into a doorway while they line up and hacking away except for the chainsaws and pitchforks of course.
