That's the trickster, not the pagans as a group.
The pagans follow the trickster, and have his goals. They worship him, live with his beasts, and follow his dictums. You can't separate the two.
They are to be pitied in T2, true ... but that was the metal age. In T1 the pagans were just as nasty as the mechanists were in T2.
That's always been my impression, anyway.

What Chade said.
@Platinumoxicity- I agree that the Pagan's power should be tied to the woods, something which was woefully neglected in DS, but to suggest that outside of that setting the Pagans could only function as spies and saboteurs seems rather silly to me. Pagan magic would be next to useless in the City, but a good old sword or bow would still be quite functional.

Absolutely, it's all a matter of time periods and the balance of power. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, therefore when one faction prospers the other must inversely suffer. In TDP the Pagan faction was strong therefore they used their power to slaughter the Hammers, by TMA the balance had shifted and Mechist faction killed off the Pagans. In all probability this same cycle has been going on for generations with the Keepers intervening whenever things got too bad.

My point was that the Hammerites and Pagans as they were presented in TDS were boring and too similar. They shouldn't both be openly militant forces. That's like putting reds against the blues. It's just simply boring. If there are 2 opposing forces, thay shouldn't both be:
[People+Weapons+Magic=FightOnStreetWithWeaponsAndMagic]
It's unimaginative and gets old way too quick.

Indeed, they did badly screw things up, and I'm definitely not say that I support it. Like so many things in DS, it was a "decent concept but horribly executed".They should have done it right, set up a few skirmishes in key locations, rather than an all out war, but still I think the Pagans should be every bit as violent as the Hammer, though preferably in there own style (a healthy mix of human and beastie fighters). I just don't think they should be limited to stealthy behind the scenes stuff, that more the keepers MO.
