What made this level scary?

Hearing that insane laugh behind you as you flee from haunts, then rapidly tapping the escape key as they converge on you in the corner. Those sick twisted child noises the apparitions make. The horrible lonely feeling of death and destruction in St.Vales, those weird "we starve" cries for help in the library. The list goes on.

Being forced to go into "Aaaah! Get it off me! Get it off me!" situations. Again and again.
(It also hurt more when I thought haunts, like zombies, couldn't be killed with ordinary weapons.)

just the general "scary" feel of it. And the Haunts. One of the things i loved about TDP was playing at night with all the lights off and volume up. You were just immersed in the whole game. It was awsome in that respect.
And the haunts chanting "join us now" had a eerie feel to it!

For me, it was the hunting aspect. You have to sneak around and assassinate the haunts without the zombies catching you because you didn't bother to stock up on enough holy water/fire arrows and if you make too much noise you're gonna have a fuggin undead army on your butt. I've been working on my fear of the undead by getting out of reach and just staring at them, but I still freak out when I have to go walk around near them.
Why havn't they rotted apart yet....

The frightening part for me was being trapped in a (relatively) small place with a bunch of creepy undead all around; there weren't many places where you could hide out that were undead-free. You lived with the constant fear that you'd run right into to one in the gloom.
Then add in the incessant noise they made; the stertorous moans of the zombies, the eerie whispers of the haunts plus the sounds of chains, and you create an almost claustrophobic feel to the level.
The worst were the close corridors when you realize they're getting closer and closer but there's nowhere to hide.
*Brrrr* I can still hear them...
No happy dreams tonight.:tsktsk:

Oh god, I am ashamed to admit that it is only TODAY that I finished this level, after having the game for years. Simply because I was so terrified of the level I never got past grabbing the eye. It just freaked me so much. Then I decided to start playing from the beginning again and battled my way through it. I couldn't believe it when Brother Murus showed up, I was traumatised.
For me it is scary because of the quantity of undead/haunts there are... not impossible to dodge, but very hard to. The noise of the bloody chains... not being able to mantle the ledge back up to the catherdral when you're in a rush...st. yora's with the rope i could never get on (where was i supposed to have turned the power on? i missed that)
Ewww.

Playing Thief II first I already had experience with the undead but definetly not enough I soon learnt! Haunts were ok, infact I got a bit dissapointed with the Haunts. Their look and the sound is awesome. The atmosphere they seem to radiate is just jaw-dropping (especially when in Thief II, almost EVERY guard is human). Yet, as soon as you learn how weak they are it's just like.... meh. Another haunt, another backstab.
The Zombies are ok as long as I have something to kill 'em with. First time I saw 'em in Thief II was LotP though, reading the Book o' Ash and turning round and oh f***** jesus what the hell is this??? I remember just running out the window and dying as I fell to the ground. If I have no weapon to kill 'em with, they I get a bit edgy, especially in cramped conditions.
But thinking, wouldn't it of been SO much more challenging if the Haunts were immune to everything the zombie's were to? (Also, stabbing a Haunt makes sense but stabbing an APPARITION who is TRANSLUCENT makes no sense whatsoever :P). Perhaps a mod could do this?

Shasing over and over again!

What makes RTC scary is rounding up about 20 haunts/zombies to flashbomb and try to kill with fire arrows all at once.
