Yeah, it's easy to forget how "BJ" looks to non-regulars when one's gotten over the same expected "BJ" jokes in the Thief forums years ago.

Nah, I was saying crippled when I meant the gameplay.
Name
one significant gameplay feature from T1/T2 that isn't replicated in The Dark Mod.

It's just a difference of opinions. It replicated Thief fancily, but I idn't like a lot of aspects. Like the mantling. It wasnt' perfect iin Thief, but in TDM I really disliked it.
Don't worry, I didn't offend your precious mod.

In other words, you've got nothing. Good.

I could never understand why they (The TDM Team) chose ID Tech 4. Out of all the game engines, this one is the most cumbersome, hardware-wise. Also, almost all thief fans use Windows, so it's a wonder the TDM team didn't just use Source. It's alot more cumbersome (developer-wise), but friendlier to older systems.

It also has a terrible lighting system, while tech 4 has one well-suited to stealth gameplay.

It was chosen because it 'best suited' the gameplay needs of a thief inspired game like TDM. Source didn't. If you have any intention of succeeding in a project like this, you go with the tech that will help you succeed...not the tech that is the most 'trendy' to use. Id tech 4 is highly scalable on lower end systems, and doom 3 ran like a top on my old desktop with a Geforce FX 5200, 1 gig of ram and an Athlon XP 2000+. Once we optimized TDM, I was also able to get very playable framerates on that old system as well.
We also had the benefit of being able to use the 'open source' level editor GTK Radiant. Our coders have almost completely rewritten that level editor to best suit our needs.
You say most Thief players are Windows users, but so what? Many people are now playing Thief by using Wine under Linux...so with TDM, we can support Linux natively...and Mac OSX when we find someone to compile a Mac port for us.
Id Tech 4 will be open source too, a huge plus.
Honestly, I can't think of any good reason for us to not have used it. lol I highly doubt the mod would have been finished if we hadn't.

Which is certainly a difference of opinion considering mantling is one thing that pretty much 99% of players has said is better than any of the previous Thief games.

Thank goodness they did *not* use the source engine. I would then have to worry about some random rich guy deciding I don't deserve to play the game anymore and shutting down the authentication system in a few years for source-based games. What good would TDM be if it were to remain forever tied to a system like that?
I seriously have pondered what it would have been like if they had used the Quake 3 engine though. It runs fast as hell, even on 8-year-old hardware. We thief fans have never really been graphics fanatics, and besides there is XReal, which added per-pixel lighting and other fancy stuff to Q3. I guess the physics would suck though.
