Xreal would have been a great engine to use if it had been available at the time, but I think it only came into being around a year or so after we went into production. It has since been abandoned in favor of the recently released wolf:ET source code. The rendering engine is being ported to that I guess. As for using vanilla Quake 3, yeah...that would have been doable...but we really wanted to have the benefit of the updated D3 shadows and physics...gave us a great head start.
If the community ever wanted to try porting TDM to Xreal as a side project, that would certainly be interesting. A lot of work though, since I think the Quake 3 engine was built in C and Idtech 4 is C++

Thief and Dark Mod do not exclude each other so don't ignore one for the sake of the other; a lot of players are playing both.
I never really left Thief but most of my play time for the past 3 or 4 years has been taken up with Dark Mod plus I couldn't get Thief to work on my new Vista machine last year so only occasionally played Thief on my XP PC. Just yesterday I finally got Thief 2 working on Vista so now I can enjoy some of the best recent Thief FMs. So in a way I am like you schtib.
I can recommend King's Story but with a warning that it is difficult for many. I hope to resume playing that some time as I started it on my XP PC. But now I'm starting afresh on the campaign When Still and although I'm only just inside from the start it looks wonderful. Hope the gameplay matches up but it's OK so far.
But don't overlook Dark Mod because it plays fine and looks great - essentially pure Thief gameplay taken to the next level.

Fidcal, play Rose Cottage. Visually stunning. Here is another person that does play both Thief and TDM. I'm busy lately with the Dark mod, helping with a few things, but always on the look out for a new Thief FM to play too.
I had to get in the right frame of mind to play Kings Story, not being tired helps. :P
