Playing the games I would commonly try to be very conservative and see if I could get in range of grabbing the rope arrow and, at the same time, drop from a safe height. Didn't work out most of the time, obviously.
One time though, [SPOILER]and this was using the rope arrow to descend into the "face" trap in TDP crypt level[/SPOILER], I actually managed to jump from the rope arrow and grab it at the same time, whilst landing safely on the intended ledge.

:cheeky: Well, congrats on that. ;) The first time I've tried that was the beginning of the Sword mission. I was hanging in front of that balcony and snatched the arrow, expecting myself to be able to direct my fall towards the balcony... I ended up feeling very foolish as I fell while staring upward at those beams. I was surprised when I survived the fall, I thought Garrett would break his spine or something...

the trick is to get to a point on the rope that you want to jump from, then look up at the rope, then hit jump, and then your use key a split second later.
sometimes it's just not possible, though. i can think of at least one situation in cult of the resurrection where if you try it [SPOILER]on the trip back from the sword[/SPOILER] you'll take damage. it won't kill you, but ouch.
