Besides swimable water, I think its high time we had some normal types of conveyance pop up in Thief.
Why?
If there is a ride-able horse, then there is a STEALABLE horse. Am I right? And maybe a guy that buys those stolen horses. :ebil:
Same with carts (the kind with a horse at the front, not the .. other type *shudder*). Why stick to petty theft?
Also since Garrett could possibly be traveling to another town, what about stagecoaches. They could sit at the depot until Garrett is ready to travel on a certain mission. Garrett buys a ticket or steals one and gets into the coach... or on a train if any mech-tec is left.. the load screen for next mission area could show passing scenery and then the mission starts with him getting out of the vehicle. Its better than having him show up like at craigscleft 50 miles from nowhere and he appears to have walked the whole way.
Garrett is really old-school, back in thief 1 and 2 he walks 50 miles each way, up hill.

I know this:
"You know exactly what games people are going to mention on this thread to bash your suggestions."
That's why I'm kind and won't mention them. :)

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c262/Diah_/OBScreenShot84.jpgBeen there, done that. It was called Oblivion. There really wasn't very much that was Thieflike about that game (or Morrowind) imo. Though both games were lots of fun and very immersive, they just weren't Thief. But travel by horse took up a lot of time (unless you did the instant-transport thingy) and though it was fine for OB I don't think it would work in Thief. In spite of sometimes awesome scenery, I have to admit that at times I'd get rather bored just plodding along to the next town; wolves, demons, & other adversaries that tried to ambush me notwithstanding. Also; the first time I tried to steal a horse I ended up in prison.
I'd much rather stick to Garrett's current mode of transportation, thankyouverymuch. I have no problem with Garrett having to walk to the next town, during which the time is minimized by the assumption that he spent X amount of time travelling and then arrived safely as opposed to having to plod along a road or trail to get to another town. Though I do see possibilities with train travel. There've been several really great train FMs and it might be interesting if Garrett has to achieve some objective while being a passenger on that train by the time it arrives at the next town. I don't much like the prospect of having to sit at some train station waiting, though.

I'm gonna have to second what Dia said, horse riding might be desirable in an RPG but its just not for Thief. Honestly, imagine dodging the City Watch while on a horse, it would rapidly cease to be a matter of stealth and become more like Grand Theft Medieval. As for trains and even stage coaches, if done right, they could be enjoyable additions to the game.

LOL Grand Theft Medieval. I didn't think of that. Yeah I don't want to play that way. I was thinking of Garrett stealing one while noone was looking and quietly taking it to a trader for some gold. Maybe can have the attempt fail if the player tries to jack a horse with a guy on it, or get thrown if he tries to gallop in town..
I donno, just looks weird without horses. I remember some people even try to attach a cart to a burrick in FMs. How about horses pulling carts that are not stealable?

A horse doesn't come in handy when you go "Thieves' Highway"- style.

If it's done right then okay, but I'm concerned it might raise more problems than it's worth. Still, how would you implement it?

It would be somewhat... odd to have all of this stuff popping out of nowhere (but then again, there were the Mechanists...)
I do suppose, actually, that you could hear horses/carriges as ambient sounds in... at least TDP
However, riding horses (or dragging them around with you) isn't very stealthy, and seems like a more time-taking side mission. All in all, it seems like it could be distracting to the game, and I personally wouldn't like it too much. To me it's just, you know... horsing around! (That was a good one, you know it)
As for trains/carriges and such, I would really only like them to be a one-time event.

I wouldn't like horses, but if you see people riding burricks, just for adding originality it would be great(maybe).
About the trains and other vehicles I will say yes, because I like it.It was done in T2X and I liked it.If the train or other vehicle isn't too modernized it would maybe work well.

If there are boats and submarines in Thief, I don't think horses and carts will hurt anyone.
