I mentioned Rise of Flight in a thread around here when it was still early in development, maybe before they changed the name. Haven't played it yet, though. I want to. I love IL-2 and play it all the time.
Rise of Flight is more realistic than
IL-2 in almost every area, so if you're into realism,
Rise of Flight is a good one for you!
The demo is free to play for two weeks. It's the full sim except for no career mode, no campaigns (except for the first mission or two of the training mission), and only two aircraft are flyable. Technically, I don't think you're supposed to re-register once your two weeks are expired, but if you haven't made up your mind by then, there's nothing preventing you from registering another demo account with a new e-mail address.

Here's a preview of the new RoF plane. I love that they made an air-show style trailer, because it looks and sounds real enough that you can pretend you're at one.

There have also been some radical changes to Rise of Flight in recent times.
Firstly, and most importantly, the base game (with two flyable planes) is now free! They have removed all restrictions on the demo version, so you now have unlimited play with the basic version of the sim. As before, you can purchase add-on aircraft to expand the scope of the game. I still haven't downloaded it myself (it's a bit of a monster at 3.6 GB), but I look forward to doing so soon.
Coming in a rather close second is the huge update released earlier this month, which added a comprehensive 'Career' mode to the game. This should mean that at long last there is a genuine successor to the likes of Red Baron 2, and that's a little bit amazing in today's market. It also sounds as if producing it half killed them, so hopefully it proves worthwhile.
Details of that update are here:

edit: Oh, and those screenshots are just
astonishing:

Well holy shit there's no excuse then (aside from clearing some HD space for it). I don't know the stats on it, but this marketing strategy works for me in the sense that this is motivation to get it right away and I can see myself buying the full package later on.

This is a great idea, I can see a lot more people getting into it now that it's more economical to play.

Now I'm interested.

The new career mode still is a bit less polished than Red Baron's. Rise of Flight's career is in public beta, and it feels like it. However, it is none the less good, if you're into single-player. I'm more of a multiplayer person myself. Either way, now that the sim is free, there's no reason to not try it. The two aircraft which come with it are the SPAD S.XIII and the Albatros D.Va. The former is the fastest airplane at low altitude, and the latter is one of the best ships for newbies.

Hmm. Wonder what their reasoning is behind the Alb- it gets trashed by Allied fighters that out-climb it, or go into a dive that rips off the Alb's wings. I'd have thought the D.VII (despite its faults) would be a better choice, it's more of an all-rounder.

The Albatros D.Va is better in multiplayer than the Fokker D.VII is (though not the Fokker D.VIIF, which is much better than either). I think it's a great choice for one of the two free airplanes. I've always recommended that my students learn on the Albatros D.Va, because it is easy-to-fly without being so powerful as to teach bad habits. If an airplane is easy-to-fly and incredibly powerful, like the Fokker D.VIIF or the Bristol, then the airplane is too forgiving of mistakes and so the pilot never realizes that he made that mistake. The Albatros is only too forgiving of one thing, and they unlearn that one pretty quickly when they move on to a more advanced training aircraft.
Online, in a fair fight, the Albatros is more or less a match for every Allied scout except for the Sopwith Pup and Sopwith Camel. The Sopwith Triplane, S.E.5a, and Sopwith Dolphin tend to dominate it, but it's a close thing. The Albatros is a great match for the SPAD S.XIII and Nieuport 28. And it's pretty much absolutely superior to the D.H.2, Nieuport 11, and Nieuport 17.
So, the Albatros D.Va is an easy-to-fly airplane of average competence in multiplayer. A good pilot in an Albatros can generally defeat any Allied scout except for a Sopwith Pup or Camel. For these reasons, I find its selection as one of the two free aircraft to be a logical choice. Two of the top ten pilots in the community duelled SPAD S.XIII versus Albatros D.Va (the two free aircraft), and the fight lasted over eleven minutes. And that was with the SPAD having out-climbed the Albatros well before entering gun range. Here's a link to a post containing the recording (which requires the sim to view). It's the one labelled "SPAD XIII versus Albatros D.Va from both pilots' perspectives": (

I was playing this a month or so ago and I just couldn't get into it like I have for IL-2. I did a couple of missions (granted on the free version); now I'm back to playing IL-2 to get my dogfighting fix again. I can't exactly pin down what it is that held me back... It might just be innate preference for WWII planes and dogfighting (I even painted an Oscar to the squad-colors connected to a place I was connected to in Japan). And I feel better sticking with planes I've had a lot of experience flying, so I can actually not suck when I'm fighting. I was getting killed in ROF and couldn't move as aggressively as I was used to. The performance for me is much better on IL-2 too, and of course that makes a big difference when you have like 0.3 seconds to make a move. I might go back to it sometime though; I don't have any particular prejudice against it... I just didn't get into it the first time I tried.
