I respect your enthusiasm for Gothic (I am soooo gay for the first 2 games) but I think Gothic 2 destroys Gothic. Especially with Night of the Raven installed on top of it.

It's a oldskool game done for oldskool gamers. But if you don't like exploration, than maybe this is not the game for you. But any Gothic fan will remember the first AshBeast ;)
I think you mean Shadow Beast ("Schattenläufer"). Ash beast are the ones in Risen.

Ja :)
Shadow Beast were fun. But I only played the game once, 10 years ago.
I still regard Gothic 1 as the best from the series, because the story is overall superior to Gothic 2. I mean the overall consistency, the beginning, the Sleeper, Diego, the final battle were more rewarding than Gothic 2. Because in G2 after 15% of the game it becomes clear that you have to kill the dragons if you want to progress. But they didn't tell you that after you kill the last dragon, there is max one more hour of grind and the game is over. In my opinion this is the biggest flaw of the second game, and in most of the other aspects, G2 is quite superior to the first game.

Could I ask what made you quit the game?
The short answer would be it just didn't really "catch" me in any way. If I were to try to think of specific reasons, I would say that it felt rather aimless, and I found myself wondering what I was supposed to be doing/why, and never seemed to get any good answers. In a part where I was captured into the mage's compound, I was thinking "I don't really want to become a mage", but there wasn't really anything else to do while there. Maybe I just didn't catch the other options? I managed to escape by jumping over a wall but then it seemed like there was nothing else to do, once I got out, so I reloaded and kept doing the mage's training, since at least that was a solid goal to go for in a game where I felt no real drive to do anything most of the time. I quit playing the game after I got stuck at a certain point and couldn't complete the mage training (one of the main NPC's I had to talk to had somehow died, and there was no way to reload and bring them back...even tried cheats to summon the guy).
I think my verdict was the game just isn't my brand of game? I usually like a pretty clear central storyline to keep me interested and focused on playing through everything else, and games where I stop and think "wait, what am I really supposed to be doing here?" don't usually keep me very long. The same is true for a lot of other 'sandbox'ish type games. The draw of exploration for exploration's sake only keeps me for so long. But hey, I loved minecraft so there must be a "right" way at least in the back of my mind somewhere.

What can I say!? I agree, the story was not so focused in Risen. You were unlucky and that bug was really nasty. The end chapters were horrific and the game was unfinished. But I can give them credit for trying. I prefer to play such games instead of polished crap.
It should be out this year and from what I know, it will soon enter alpha stage.

Attn: old toro and anyone else as excited for Risen 2 as I am...
This link will explain a TON of info on R2.\
(
http://forum.worldofplayers.de/forum/showthread.php?t=808486) Lancelot Link.
Highlights include:
Multiple islands, each with its own climate. Each island is a loading zone, but once on the island content will be streamed. Total area is said by the devs to be much larger than R1.
Crafting is in. Apparently it is going to fit into the lore and not fell tacked on.
GUNS? IN MY RISEN? WTF???? Yes, firearms are in. I assume as an alt. to crossbows.
No swimming :(
Various Mini-games
Eavesdropping! Sounds to be a bit like it was in Assassin's Creed.
Armor isn't a basic all-in-one anymore. It finally consists of 'pieces' (boots, chest, greaves, helmet, etc...)
The magic system consists of (dramatic drumroll)...VOODOO! :p
Great read, check it out. This game is shaping up to be the game I go insane while waiting for it to ship. Take your time, PB, but dammit I am playing Risen right now in anticipation for the sequel and I want more Gothic/Risen ASAP.

I've been thinking of giving Risen a try, actually...
