Yeah, the animations do suck a bit, but no more or less than they suck in a good 65.7% of other games out right now. I can't really fault it on that alone.
I can. Good animations have been possible in games for over a decade. Pirahna Bytes games have had consistently horrible, shit-ass animations since Gothic 1 (don't know what, if anything, they did before that), and haven't improved since then. What they need to do is fire the Lead Animator, and if necessary fire some other animators. Their work is crap. I see better walk cycles from students all the time - I just can't imagine that in this economy they can't find a few decent animators in Europe somewhere.
I don't care about graphics in my games usually, but the wretched character animations make the games look amateurish, and I'm sure it turns people off.
I'll still buy it though.

Bad animations didn't do much to kill off the Fallout 3 fervor, a game that makes even the Risen characters look like graceful ballerinas dancing Swan Lake in comparison.
Don't think I'm disagreeing with you here. I'd love to see more time spent on animations. But like it or hate it, it's something most developers work on almost as an afterthought. I can't single out one game alone when most of the others are just as guilty.

the more I hear, the more I like it.

After serious flak from the community concerning the appearance of the main character, claiming he looked too girlish, PB announced they revised the Nameless Hero.
The makeover will be revealed on 3rd of September between 18:00 and 18:30 MET but only if 400 Risen fans are simultanously active in the official forum.
Hmm, in these uncertain times one should avoid bigger crowds. Like by logging out quickly after posting. Or in some cases by not logging in at all. I´m outta here, that next guy posting looks suspicious.

that's funny, I don't mind the hero since you only see his back for the whole time. What I did NOT like is the stupid, bad and repetetive sound he makes when slashing away at the enemy: haaaaaa - haa-tshak - haaaaa
Imagining hearing that for 50hours makes me wonder if the first mod for Risen will remove those annoying grunts or make them more subtle

The video review from a few posts back already comments on that issue. Fighting sounds from that video are preliminary and will be replaced.
The hero did look like Beckham somehow, i´ll give them that. Replace his shiny armor with a jersey, add some green and a crowd and you have ProEvolutionSoccer.
Also somebody having spent I don´t know how long on a prison ship before being washed ashore wouldn´t look as cleanly shaved and bald like he does.

Funny thing for me is that now there is a game that i COULD and SHOULD play in german (it's made in/for that language)
BUT I will get it from the UK and then just mod the german voices in because in the country the game was made it is about 20 euros
more expensive than getting it online from game.co.uk or play.com. This is ridiculous. I own Gothic1&2 on english as well because they come from GOG, are cheaper and don't include DRM
