I finished the game as a Mage yesterday. I was a little disappointed in the limited number of spells available, most of the time I stuck to Fireball as there aren't any attack spells until you get Inferno (And that's far too late in the game to be of any use). It wasn't until I hit chapter 3 that I got to the third seal, so I had to do a lot of back tracking to unlock all the chests I'd left behind, which was a bit of a pain.
Once I was ready to face Mendoza I had 110 skill points spare which I ended up dumping in Magic Bullet as I'd only previously spent points in Fireball, Mana, Seal and Alchemy. MB was quite effective against Mendoza but I'm not convinced it's anywhere near as good as Fireball or Freeze.
Magic is certainly the easier route, but I think I prefer being a Swordsman/blacksmith/thief for the Don.

i am doing exactly that (started mage first, now fighter for don) and it's funny how the game changes: at the middle of chapter1 I am now much more confident and able to leave the city and go hunting/exploring than I was when I know I will be going the mage route and saved all my xp for that. since I know exactly what I want now:
all max smith / all max alchemy - many points in power and sword/crossbow, nothing for mana/dexterity
I'm pretty buffed for the wildlife (except friggin damn ghouls) and make tons of money. As a measly mage I struggled in those chapters until I got fireball > 5. from then on there's nothing left to fear what fireball, fred and a potion can't fix.

Found an interesting bug:
I had Fred out while battling an ashbeast. He died and I finished off the ashbeast but unlike previous times, Fred's skeletal body was still there, laying on the ground (it normally disappears). So I walk over and notice that Fred is clickable, so I click him, getting a dialogue box asking him to either follow me or stay. So I click on 'follow', and nothing happens (presumably because he's dead, duh).
A bit later in the game I'm fighting some miscellaneous monster and I hear the sound of a sword being drawn. Moments later, an invisible sword has got the monsters attention as it swings itself all around (the 'trail' following the swinging sword is visible, but nothing else). The monster I'm fighting can't hit whatever it is that's fighting it, but I'm free to pelt it with fireballs while it's distracted.
I can only assume the ghost of Fred's dead skeleton was helping me, and this time it's immortal :) (so I s'pose it's an undead-undead?)
He lasted for some time before I finally 'lost' him, or rather I didn't notice his affect on the world. But while I had him around it made for a very amusing sight.

I'm having another crack at the Don route though specialising in Axes this time. I don't know if it's because they're more damaging or because I know the game better, but I'm kicking ass and taking names whilst still in Chapter 1. My first time with the Don I didn't tackle Ghouls till late in Chapter 2, but I've taken on two at a time now and though I take a few hits, I can knock them for six without too much difficulty.
Axes do start off with the disadvantage of being two handed (And the preclusion of a shield means they're nearly useless against animals) but hit level 6 and you're away. Just a shame I won't be able to forge any Obsidian ones.

Wow, you kids weren't joking around. The ending is a disappointment. Fun game, though.

I'm on 2nd playthrough, swordmaster for the don and reached the 4th chapter. I'm stopping now since there is nothing new to do here. all the don-specific stuff has been done, I lived for the mages indifference to my bandit's problems (last playthrough as a mage they were all cuddly and cute and concerned) and reached sword10+crossbow6 and got 150strength. all the rest of chapter4 are the 5 graverobberies that actually aint that hard as opposed to raiding the main vulcan temple alone (biggest fight was me alone vs. 14 lizards).
I'll stop now and will finish Machinarium, play a little Lucidity until I wait for Torchlight/Borderlands.

Finally got this yesterday, after Play.com took a ridiculously long time to even get around to sending it off.
I didn't play it for long yet, but my initial impression is that it's very similar to Gothic 2 - which certainly isn't a bad thing in my book.

Does anyone know where I can buy levitation scrolls? I assume the guy who makes scrolls at the monastery would be the usual choice. Unfortunately, he does not want to speak to me now (I'm in the middle of chapter 4). I've tried telling him a joke but to no avail.

Have you tried the mage at the Bandit camp?
