I'm pretty sure he only sold potions, but I'll give him a shot...

he changes inventory depending on where in the story you are.

Yeah, you're right, I went back and found a whole heap of scrolls for sale.
Anyway, I've now finished the game. Took me about 30 hours, so it proves my theory that games generally last around half as long as their developers say. As others have said, the last boss was a bit lame (felt almost like an extended quick time event!). I found battling Ashbeasts a lot more challenging.
Having said that though, this is the most fun new rpg I've played since The Witcher.

game took me 60hours to complete and I finished it lvl30. I don't know how others get through it so quick...

I lost a bit of time because I ended up not doing most of the chapter 1 monastery quests (Joined the bandits early). I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have got that many extra hours out of those though.

Is it possible to do the monastery quests yet still join the Don?

I've already been playing it for 33 hours game time, not counting the hours I've spent dying and reloading, and I'm still only at Chapter 2. :o
I am playing at Hard, though.

once you joined one party for good, a lot of quests are gone. I did do all side-missions in chap1 and 3/4 for monastery/don. If you then join the monastery you have the whole "magic education" quests additionaly, that way chap1 really last very long. Also, I explored as much of the island as possible (even with running away from tougher foes) and tried to kill as much as possible because after each chapter-change, monsters respawn or get tougher.

I finished this last night, having clocked in around 60 hours. A truly worthy successor to Gothic 2, though the ending was rather horrible. From the build-up, I had expected a multiple-choice ending, but instead I got something right out of an action-oriented console game that also completely ignored my chosen profession as a mage by forcing me to use weapons and armour that I had no skill in . . . :erg:
Another thing - was there only one spell in the fourth seal (inferno), or did I just miss the runes somewhere? Overall, the runes seemed more than a little too well hidden, as I never found one for Strong Healing either.

I think the spell that makes you morph into an ashbeast is also a level 4 rune.
