You must have something weird going on behind the scenes. It ran perfectly fine with my 8800GTS and 2GB of ram back in the day.
If by "perfectly" you include 2-minute load times and regular freezes when crossing over certain boundaries (and causing the game to stop to load more data), then sure.

I think I would have stopped playing it altogether before getting quite that angry... I hope. :o

I just started playing Gothic 1. Got the Gothic Universe pack to work through. First impressions - weird controls that are gonna take a lot of getting used to, and some pretty dodgy voice acting. But the world seems compellingly original, and there certainly seems to be a heck of a lot to do! Anything I should know before I go any further, like an absolutely essential fan patch or something?

The English voice acting in Gothic 1 is very poor; the German acting is much, much better. At least they got people without horribly strong American accents to do the English voices in Gothic 2.

Except for Diego, one of the only decent voices in G1 and they replaced him with some sort of wild west hermit in G2.
As for Things You Should Know About Gothic: Melee combat will be difficult at first, even once you've mastered the controls. If you can at least train yourself up once in one-handed weapons then you'll find life so much easier. Even if you're going the magic route, it's good to have a backup.

I'm sure I've said this here before, but the wonky controls only feel wonky when used with a KB/M setup. Using a keymapper and a 360/PS2 controller makes for a much better experience in my opinion.

There are some news about Risen from a (
http://www.gamestar.de/news/pc/rollenspiel/1957934/risen.html) German games magazine site which I will translate and summarize shortly:
* There will be achievements in the PC version. They can be switched off in the options menu to not put off atmosphere-loving RPG-fans.
* Despite the achievement system Risen will be no "Games for Windows" game, will have no official ladder (I´m unfamiliar with this expression, maybe an achievements ranking system?) and will come without "Games for Windows Live".
* Achievements will be categorized in 3 classes: achievements for clowns (like dying spectaculary), collectors and role-players and their completion will not give players an advantage in the game.
* Urinating (involving display of genitals) has been removed from all versions (thanks to English protection of minors). It won´t be possible to edit this feature back in by playing around with the ini-file.
Apparently a playable demo of Risen will be available at the gamescom 2009 in Collogne from 20.-23rd of August at the booth of Deep Silver.

So I woke up this morning in 2001...

Uhm... was this part of gameplay? Because if it was than by Jupiter I want it back. Nothing like taking a leak on a freshly killed demon-beast that made you reload your game ten times frantically and at wits end.
