Dude, I can only respond to what the author wrote. He said that religion in Thief made it work ... if someone's going to stick stupid sentences like that in his sloppy article, I'm going to call him on it.
*shrugs*
So he's arguing his position without whacking in a bunch of qualifying words first ... it's really not that big a deal. Happens all the time.
You can even say it's good writing style: he avoids bloating his article with a bunch of flip-flop words that don't add any real substance. (I'd be interested to see how other people view this, actually.)
I think you're making this a bigger deal then it has to be, and missing out on some good arguments in the process.

Regardless of it's accuracy, the article is just completely pointless. If you're a Thief fan, then it's just a list of statements you already knew. If you're not a Thief fan, then it's a list of statements you don't care about. It's just a bunch of statements, there's no encouragement to play, or not to play, Thief. There's no attempt to connect the player's game experience with their real life religious experience. Nothing. It's just "Religion in Thief was really well done. The End." Yeah, no shit. What's your point?

Well, at least we've had a fun chat about all this...
... Me? I'm getting me some munchies... This topic is making me feel a little empty-headed.

Dude, I can only respond to what the author wrote. He said that religion in
Thief made it work. That is, as I said, nonsense. Take the religion out of
Thief and you still have a damn fine game. Of course it adds to the flavor and atmosphere, and of course that is part of why people like the game. But if someone's going to stick stupid sentences like that in his sloppy article, I'm going to call him on it.
Bro, I don't think he was saying that religion was the "key factor" without which Thief would have been failed utterly, just that it is very complementary to it. It helps to describe Garrett and his beliefs about the world he is in. It also allows for one to sympathize with his position, the City is corrupt in all its manifestations (especially religion), this allows for the player to be less judgmental toward Garrett and his chosen profession owing to the fact that in Thief everyone is equally guilty. Also, imagine a mission without readables and conversations, often regarding religion in some form, you could still play it, adopt the same strategies, and accomplish the same goals as before however something would feel missing, the atmosphere would be notably depleted and the player would not be drawn into the game as much. Overall, would a lack of religion have killed the game? No. Would it have harmed the game? Yes. Would it have decreased the amount of long-term Thief fans? Probably.
