Ruins of Originia FM1: Mines of Margroth (Oct. 27/2002) support - by YcatX

Yes sorry, I should be more specific, I picked up ruins of originia from thiefmissions.com and there look to be 4 missions in total, the first being mines of margroth
I've got into the mines and things have taken a decidedly weird twist, not to mention deadly, and it seems never ending, I'm not looking forward to guilded rivalry if this is a sample of what to expect ... that is if I ever finish this mission
Oh dear lord what have I done ? :tsktsk: :wot:
ycatx wherever you are, you are evil, y'hear me evil and not in a good way

Yeah, it's that huge. The second mission is a little smaller though.

somehow I seriously don't think I'm going to finish this one :(
there are gotchas all over the place, traps that have no clue they are there until they get tripped the only way to deal with them seems to be frequent saving and reloading once you find 'em, the AI are all on steroids, there's a distinct lack of readables giving any kind of hint and even when I seem to be in deep shadow the AI can see me
I even resorted to looking for a walkthrough and found (
http://web.archive.org/web/20040530043046/www.ycatx.com/thief/MoM_walkthru/MoM_walkthru.htm) this one on the wayback machine as ycatx's site doesn't seem to be around any more
---EDIT---
skimming through the readthrough, I'm going to walk away from this one, invisible mines, deadly AI that can see in the dark, doors that don't look like doors and have no clue they are there and don't frob that you have to break through
it's a little too far from the Thief universe I know for me, shame because the bit's I've played have been fun up to the decidedly nasty twists I found and there's a helluva lot of work been put into it and I don't want to dismiss that effort, but this mission just isn't for me

Well, it's up to you decide, but as for me, as far as one is ready for some real challenge, this campaign is highly entertaining. It has lots of great design and story ideas that really deserve to be observed. However, I also had to resort to walkthrough a couple of times while playing Mines, for some buttons are hard to be found no matter how much you crank up the brightness.

That HAD to have been Monty Python on the 2 mini victrolas in the bar! :thumb:
(Holy Grail? Been a LOOONNGGG time since i saw it!)
oh wait, one was about Robin Hood - from where???
There's a unreadable readable (blank pages) up on the side of a cart in main mine area in beginning, what's that?
And J H C! just how tough do you gotta make the ghosts in "The Commoners Crypts"? FOUR flash bombs to kill one? On Normal difficulty??? And that will o wisp? UNKILLABLE!!!

I believe you're talking about Mines of Morgroth, not Ashes to Ashes.

Yeah, glad to hear it wasn't just an exclusive bug on my machine. :p

You can easily sneak by them even on Expert. They are scary as hell, yes, but quite blind.

OH! Did'nt know that! :o
(all that  and  for nothing! :tsktsk:)
Oh, see, that's con-fu-sing, cuz Ashes to Ashes is also what he named the full packaged campaign! :weird: :erg:

From walkthrough:
Move on to the throne room itself. Eavesdrop the conversation, and when they (supposedly the thieves) attack, stand forth and try to draw Bantar's fire. You can dodge better than they can.
Baloney! When I do that, there is:
A. NO convo!
B. The female crossbow thief starts shooting at me, and the male just stands there like Benny on a binge, (head up arse, oblivious to the world!), and of course Bantar starts a flinging his burning eyes at me! (bloody queer! :wot: :cheeky:)
I did'nt wait to see when the bloomin ball o-hateful-light would join in!!! :nono:
EDIT: OHO! I see, another thing the walkthru left out! You have to enter invisible!!!!!
Whew, out of that freaked out place , now on to the next freaked out one!

When I go to play an FM, and I go to Darkloader, and see Ashes to Ashes, as the title listed for Ruins_Originia_v1.zip; well then...
