I think it was mainly the virtue grind that kept me from finishing Ultima IV. Even though it's not apparent at first, the improvements made from U4 to U5 were huge, in terms of refining the game mechanisms, plot, writing. I have replayed U5 in its original form - I'd only reply U4 if it was given the Ultima V: Lazarus or The Ultima VI Project treatment.

Justice is gained from the herbs woman, just like honesty. You must be doing something wrong. The scale only goes to about 99 anyway. If you've done 100+ herb transactions and you're still not maxing out, you must be screwing something else up pretty badly. Sacrifice and compassion were the only ones I didn't max in the course of normal play. I had to basically farm blood and coins.

Virtues maxed, hooray. Yeah, I farmed more transactions for justice.
Looking forward to Ultima V when I get the chance to play it in a couple of years!

ARGH.
So I'm doing one of my final dungeons (Shame), get lost, exit - and end up outside Hythloth. There is no way to leave - the balloon is gone, no boats, no place to blink to. I tried going back in, moving around, exiting, and I just come back outside Hythoth. How the heck do I continue the game?
Edit: Figured it out. Didn't realize dungeons were linked by altars. Complicated!
