Um, isn't limiting yourself to linux kind of...limiting? :weird:

I'm not sure. I seems a little odd but then if you want to run Steam of a Windows machine you can already.
I wonder if they knew about Nvidia's Shield project. If so it kind of makes sense that Steam via Windows could work on the Shield whereas if you just wanted a dedicated Steam console this fits the bill.

So are most of these going to be Linux-based Steam Boxes? We'll come out with our own and we'll sell it to consumers by ourselves. That'll be a Linux box, [and] if you want to install Windows you can. We're not going to make it hard. This is not some locked box by any stretch of the imagination. We also think that a controller that has higher precision and lower latency is another interesting thing to have.
The Gabster speaks and he
pooped on Windows 8 again. Big splashy SteamBox ads on Steam, can't wait!
It looks kinda tiny like this text, must be the prototype. :)

Jay thinks it's rather neat, and likes that PC architecture is being rejiggied especially for home use, rather than being a legacy device that's supposed to be all things to all people egineers/accountants/gamers alike.
But you gotta ask - how many boxes do you want in your home. Maybe if you've got teenage kids (or are one) and want something for the bedroom then this is pretty crafty. For something that's in the family room - I kinda wouldn't don't a box for music, another for movies & tv, another for gaming, another for work or whatever. Generally I want less stuff and more room for people.
My two cents.

What you do live in? An inter-city apartment in Tokyo?
Also to the answer the commonly asked question "Why would I want this when I already have a X-times more powerful PC and/or I can build a far more powerful PC for the same amount of money? WE likely aren't the target audience for the various "Steam Box" devices. Probably the point is to make PC gaming more accessible to broader audiences, not to preach to the converted.

Hey hooplehead, not all of us can afford a very huge place with lots of space, especially if there's slightly too much furniture. I only just recently managed to get into a larger place -- before, I didn't even have any place to put my console toys and would have to put them away when I wasn't using them. Could you possibly be more obnoxious?*
* That was a rhetorical question, not a challenge.
jay pettitt on 9/1/2013 at 21:42
A house. Some people prefer not to have their living space dominated by a big telly and a big hifi. You'd be amazed what some folk get up to.
SubJeff on 10/1/2013 at 00:32
Yeah dethtoll, I hear you on the space front. It's not that I don't have space but I don't want stuff all over the surfaces. Some of my friends have even less space because they live with their SOs.
Having said that, this thing is tiny. I almost want want for the sheer size; I was watching a video with the A7 and A3 and my box is a hulk in comparison.
