I tried Hardwar once because it was recommended here. The lack of tutorial or instructions made it impossible to play.
Hmm, I read an (
http://zedo.hardwar.org.uk/) online tutorial before I even had the game, so I guess that's why I never had that issue.
It's a fair point though. You have to read through that tutorial before you play if you want to get anywhere. By itself, the game caters to masochists that like to figure everything out for themselves (which is also interesting when you're in the mood for that kind of thing; but anyway fortunately not necessary.)

Thanks for the link, that's a good resource, but the problem is less what to do and more how to do it. For example, how to go places. As far as I can see you start in a crater and can't go up over the side. The whole game is really quite opaque. Maybe the original game came with a detailed manual, I dunno.

Hardwar sounds like exactly the sort of fix I need right now. Sometimes, masochistic learn-it-yourself games that ream your ass given the slightest opportunity are fun too. I remember doing that with SS1 and having a blast. X3, though, wasn't much fun that way. At all.

I can't believe I never heard of a game that had Squarepusher and before-they-sucked Autechre on the soundtrack.

You haven't listened to
Oversteps then, I take it?

I've heard it's good, but I've been hearing that everytime they put out a new record for the past 10 years so I'm naturally skeptical.

On-topic, my favorite "pure" sandbox games are the 2 Pandemic games that made it to PC - Mercenaries 2 and The Saboteur. I tend to get bored with GTA but for some reason I enjoyed those. It's probably because a core part of the gameplay in both is blowing shit up.
