it's all about getting a fresh twist on them - it's too easy to just jam haunts in to try and be scary, without working on making the mission tense and scary even without the haunts.

I agree. One could probably create a very scary FM
without including haunts or zombies if they used a suspenseful, apprehension-filled type atmosphere. The mere suspense of the Cradle nearly did me in more than a few times. In DrK's Rocksbourg FM (#1) there was the
sudden sound of running feet intermitently throughout the FM (you never saw who was doing the running, but at times it felt as though the runner was going to knock you over in his haste - like he was right on top of you) which caused me to jump more than a few times. Sounds, lighting, and ambience go a long way towards making an FM a thriller.

youch, I just have to update my scariest moment - just entered that crypt in the 7th Crystal. :wot:

See what I meant? :cheeky:
I remembered that the Inverted Manse freaked me out the first time I played it... Exploring the abandoned factory was quite... Disturbing. In the end I got lost, but that would be fixed as the place got more familiar on later replays. When I got to the pagan temple, I was freaked out already, and then that demonic chanting starts playing... I didn't dare to do any movement that wasn't slow, and while crouched.
I absolutely hate hearing the haunts, aparitions and similars while I can't see them. Especially if they sound very near, or beyond-safety.

Scariest thing in Thief for me? My first encounter with those damn puppets! Those bastards are fast as hell! The way I keep myself from soiling my undies is just to have some warm tea right infront of me.. speaking of which... i think my stomach flu's coming back... :eww:

Yeah, the haunts scared me (there's more than just RTC ya know), the beating on the door in The Cradle, and well, the rest of the Cradle for that matter. Oh yeah, the tree beasts in T2 made me soil myself on the first encounter.
The whole cutscene in TDP/TG with
Constantine and Viktoria showing their true colors
pretty much made me scream/cry like a little girl.

Scariest thing: cradle puppets. The sound of their footsteps running after me and shrieking just does me in.
Also, I've never been able to get over the haunts. They're fine when they're wandering around whispering things to themselves, but when they're chasing me, that horrible laughter freaks me out every time. . that and they're about twice as fast and better at swordplay than me.
I've got a new thing to add, too, this one from an FM: Calendra's Cistern.
It's the beast at the bottom of the well. . .I don't know how they generated those sounds for it, but that was absolute genius. . it sounded like chanting mixed with short animalistic growls. .terrifying.
Actually, I think this scares me the most out of the three, since a huge sense of dread always falls over me whenever I get to that part of the game. .

It sounded like something trying to cough up a hairball to me.

LOL Sorry, but that just made me laugh.
I know what you mean though. I saw that . . .thing down there and was totally freaked out. Of course, I knew there was *something* down there and was scared to go down at all, until Garrett said I *had* to because he wanted his prize. Spent half an hour creeping downwards, expecting something *anything* to jump out at me. Nothing but a rock did. Then when I *finally* hit bottom and saw the thing I took another ten minutes trying to figure out how to deal with it. Was too scared to shoot it, and too scared run past it. I think I gassed it or something before I could finally move forward.
And yeah, the haunts are still quite creepy. The fact they're *fast* and no matter how you try to fight them, they are always better swordsmen than you'll ever be - usually if one gets on my tail I know I'm doomed. Zombies are ok (still icky, but they are slow, and easy to run past), apparitions are annoying, but handleable. . .but haunts. . .haunts are too smart to be easily fooled.
