I've got a new thing to add, too, this one from an FM: Calendra's Cistern.
That same beastie is even more scary in Calendra's Legacy Mission 2 because of his "special" ability. And even more scary is that killing him in CL2 fails the "don't kill anyone" objective. :grr: So you have to get the wizard guys to do it for you.

I think swordfighting haunts is good practice. It gets you in the habit of blocking. One of the strategies I use is when I'm fighting something I circle around it constantly, so it can't hit me as much.

Guess you could say I embrace the undead, like they embrace me.

http://img300.imageshack.us/img300/1315/athfavmummysmmz6.jpgHUG! CUUURSE!!I played Thief 2 first (why did so many of us do that ) so my original undead thief encounter was the Hammerite crypt in Eavesdropping. I'd NEVER been so freaked by a video game, so that will always remain special to me, even if it was a mere shadow of the terror that was the Old Quarter and the Bonehoard.
That said, I still have to give The Cradle a nod for best video game BOO atmosphere ever, if only for this one single moment:
I took a break from The Cradle (as so many of us had to) to calm my nerves with some good old nintendo via emulator. I use an xbox controller with a spliced usb cable for this kind of thing. After I finished the retro therapy I dropped the controller back down to it's normal spot on the floor next to my desk, still plugged in. Well unbeknownst to me, the xbox lockpick-rumble is fully active even in the PC version of T-DS. Back in The Cradle I begin to pick a lock and the damn thing starts humping my foot! I shoved off from the desk so hard I nearly took my chair over backwards!

For me it was when i encountered a haunt for the first time in that old mansion in the first haunted cathedral level. I thought, "oh the hammers have a base in this old city?" I blackjack him then watched in horror as it turned to reveal a skeleton face and i died there and then to the sound of that twisted laugh.

Man, this thread is giving me a serious hankering to go back and play Thief 1 again. I think I'll have to do just that, and pretty soon.

Now, after this slideshow of haunts and other undead...
What happens if I say that I was REALLY scared (more than ever) when, in a Thief2 mission, I looked back... and I was face-to-face with a guard who I didn't hear approaching?
My wireless-mouse really flew that time...

er. . which beastie was this? I've been all through mission 2 of Calendra's Legacy and didn't see it.
Do you mean that big floating eye in the Falstaff Wizards' place? That thing was a piece of cake compared to the first beast.
But it was a hairball of terror! :wot:
Wouldn't that make it a "
Scareball" then, Lady Taffer? :cheeky:
Ok, now this might seem odd to some people, but for me the scariest Thief moment for me would have to be "Whatever I let scare me". You see, it's alot like some have been saying: After awhile you become used to the Zombies and Haunts and spooky sites and find yourself pretty desensitized. If you're expecting the OM or FM to do all the work for you, you'll get pretty tired of scary moments REALLY quick. By the time I got into Thief myself I had seen so many horror stories (both fictional and real) that nothing really "shocked" me against my will (even though plenty of it DID give me a "creepy" feeling). Once I LET it get to me though (which was almost instantly because I SO wanted to enjoy Thief) it became so much MORE fun. :cheeky:
So, really, you might have a few FMs (or maybe even OMs) that'll catch you off guard at first (alot like my own experiences), but if you want to really KEEP getting spooked -- you kinda have to LET it, even though you probably already knew it was coming.
That's how I do it, anyway. :thumb:
