But those haunts . . . I remember by the beginning of Thief II, anytime I heard that tell-tale rattling chain . . . (like in the prisons in the T2 mission Framed), I usually would completely attempt to avoide those areas; unless there was something there I needed.
I know exactly what you mean, that's what I did too.

I will say, though, no matter how many times I've beaten Thief I and II, I can still go and play them through again a few months later (if I haven't bought something else at the moment :D ); for some reason, they just don't get old

I reckon that the one of the scariest THIEF II missions ever made involved you going up against keepers. They had the same abilities as you - it was basically Garrett fighting several versions of himself.
Haunts, undead etc are cool - but those Keepers were fantastic.
Oh the mission name was 'equilibrium'. Try it out if you haven't already
edit : Damn it Beaten by unwanted :). Needless to say I reckon this mission deserves a second mention - am I right?

Hmm... scariest mission...
It would have to be 'The Inverted Manse' or 'The Cradle'; both are fantastic and have me teetering on the edge of my seat continuously. I think I'll suggest the former as I still haven't finished it. Damn you SLEDGE! I'll gather my courage one day and complete it. I will!

Amen to that, brother! :cheeky:
I need to atone for my sins... Ive not played Thief in a month. BUILDER! PURIFY THIS SINNER!!
But yeah, Thief=god, and I still avoid graveyards in Theif whenever possible, cuz those bloody zombies just keep a'comin!

So I started thief from Thief: DP.
I bought it one week after it came out here in Australia, (which was as soon as I could get to a store).
I got it home, sat down with it, and got immersed. I played through Bafford's on the normal setting, then said to myself: "No, you can do this properly." and went back and did it on Expert. I have never played it on any less difficulty since that day.
So when I got to the mines under Cragscleft, I had it in my mind that this was a 'straight' steampunk setting. No magic.
I looked at those bodies, and thought: Ah, the Hammers have been working their prisoners to death, that's all.
So I walked straight past one of them.
It stood up.
And I think I lost about a year and a half off my life expectancy, right there. NEVER have I been so frightened by a game. Just... so bad.
As for what I find creepy? The servants, in T:MA. Their whispering whimper, and then the sigh, and sometimes whispering "Thank you..." as they die?
AWFUL. It makes my skin crawl.

Just makes me more inclined to kill em. :ebil: Outta mercy mind you... Wait no, thats just pure sadism. Thief is the best game to take out your sadistic desires from the safety of a shadowy, well-carpeted corner.
Another thing that scared the hell outta me from TDP: The friggin burning ghost in RTC. I was just a-walkin along, mindin my own affairs, then BOOM! a fuckin fireball comes outta NOWHERE! And im like "OMFG! WTF?!" ... then I got blasted straight into oblivion.

Somewhere on here, from a similar thread long ago, I have a post about my experience with "Return to the Cathedral" from T:TDP.
I finally managed to get the front door open, saw all the undead walking around in there, promptly closed the door and didn't play the game for another six months.
Completely unmanned me.
I did eventually finish, though.

The scariest moment in the Thief series for me have to be the first time i played the bonehoard, oh god i was but mere 13 years old, and i was so freaked out by the damn zombies stalking me, i was more focused on survival than the actual mission. But by sheer luck i managed to complete the mission when trying to hide from the damn things.
"HAH! Damn zombies and Burricks, you will never get me up here! iam invincible! Oh whats that shining? A horn?"
