Well It is mentioned in one of the Books of Legends (Vol 1, or 2, or 3)
The one on objects... Since it is now an objective in one of the first two missions, the player gets to hold on to it for the duration as a guide...
It also provides wonderful foreshadowing..

No. The big eyeballs give them a creepy insect-like or alien touch.
And that is exactly what they need in order to produce a slight shiver to the player... assuming that they are not your friends.
They are perfect.
