As you know, there is a maniac confined in the solitary cell of Shoalsgate. His name is Schmidt. Sadly we'll probably never know if designer of the mission planned to shed a light on his story in T2Gold, but certainly he planned something for that empty cell area in the basement, obviously there wasn't enough time to finish it for T2 release.
Anyway, what do you think Schmidt means when he talks to Garrett:
smi0401E - You there! I have heard them talk about you, yes. See to me, there is someone who spills blood without effort, without action, and I say yes, I understand, but you do not. Your relationship with the shadows will never know betrayal.
Doesn't he mean Karras? Karras indeed spills blood without action,a nd Schmidt can understand Karras, Karras was "betrayed" and rejected by nobility of the City and was revenging to all humanity, something similar probably happened with Schmidt, therefore he "understand"s, but Garrett "do not" since his "relationship with the shadows will never know betrayal".

I love this part of Thief 2. If you listen to everythinghe says it gets really wierd and really sick but funny :laff:
When he starts going on about killing people and then they going all "silent"
I think Stephen Russel does the voice for him but i am not sure.

That conversation never happened when I went to the door of his solitay confinement cell. Can you open it? How do you initiate the conversation?

Its not a 'conversation' exactly. Garrett does not respond to him (except to comment that 'ooh yeah, he's gone.'
Its more of the prisoner's ramblings that you can hear near/around the door. No, you don't open the door, you usually can hear it when you come close enough or stand right outside.
