Sci-fi books and comics that should be made into films. - by SubJeff

Irredeemable is an interesting idea. It could work as a stand-alone I suppose; linking it to Superman wouldn't go down well with joe public I don't think. And the mentally ill thing would have to left out because it'd been seen as critical of mental illness. I think there are enough dark films that are successes for it to be taken up though, but then it depends how bleak the ending is.
See, the mentally ill thing is a critical part of Plutonian's origin. He's not mentally ill himself -- his mother eventually ends up committing suicide and he's shipped from foster home to foster home (one foster mother ends up committing suicide as well) with nobody seemingly able to deal with this bright, sweet kid who could knock down a wall by tripping. That's going to fuck you up a bit.
Superman is never actually mentioned in the comic, except at the very, very, very end in a somewhat oblique (but awesome) way.

David Weber's Safehold might work as a miniseries or a full-grown TV series. I'd also add the Honorverse, but there's already a movie in the works, apparently (though it will be 4-5 years until it comes out).
Larry Niven's A World Out of Time could work quite well as a straight up eye candy Sci-Fi flick.
Other than that, I'd be really happy if I saw the Vorkosigan Saga and the Stainless Steel Rat series on any screen, big or small.

Not much of a sci-fi guy but I'd love to see a film version of The Stars My Destination. Might be a bit of a hard sell with a protagonist like Gully Foyle though and I'd hate it if they 'softened' him in any way.

Oh! I had forgotten about A. Bertram Chandler's John Grimes novels. John Grimes was (is? will be?) Chandler's SciFi answer to C. S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower character. Great fun could be had with these novels in movie format. These novels are pure "Liberty Hall. You can spit on the mat and call the cat a bastard."

HEY DETHTOLL - DON'T YOU THINK SNOW CRASH SHOULD BE A FILM, YEAH?
It'd be about 3 hours longer than it should be ;)

A few Michael Marshall Smith sci-fi pulp novels are ripe for movie adaptation.
Also, Altered Fucking Carbon.

I was just about to say this, so... seconded. That book throws so much stuff at the reader in such a short amount of time that it might be hard to compress into 90 or even 120 minutes, though.

Oops, yeah. That dude. Oryx and Crake would make a brilliant film, I also think. Year of the Flood might be a little more difficult, it's not as focused.
Oryx and Crake +++

While I personally enjoy the story, I can't imagine how anything NS could be made into a film without being changed beyond recognition. Though saying that, it being changed beyond recognition could still result in something good*, just obviously nullifies suggesting it as valid basis for a film.
* Dethtoll: "certainly couldn't be worse than the source material"

If they snipped out the useless bits (i.e. roughly half the book, especially the whole Sumatra pomo bullshit) it'd make for a decent film and probably even an interesting look at anarchocapitalism.
The trick is to just keep NS and his beard uninvolved in production of the film entirely..
