Hmm hmm I'm actually using this thread to get some good recommendations for SciFi books. Since I got into a reading kick in the past year or two, I've been experimenting with different books trying to figure out what I actually like. As far as SciFi goes, it's been a mixed bag. Ender's Game was so so (dragged too much in the middle and I totally called the ending by that point), but I absolutely love Asimov's Foundation series. Neuromancer is next on my list, and I also placed a hold at my library on Pratchett's Guard Guards but thats more fantasy than SciFi I guess.
So, with my short limited experience, I could see Foundation Series possibly making a very cool 45-min TV series. The books look at some 1000 years of the titular foundation, but break it up into mostly self-contained stories that jump forward a few decades, showing how the society progresses; each one has a new set of characters and motifs, but tied with an overarching theme and clear "end goal." Hence, a TV series would work great.
I've only finished the 2nd of the 3 main books (so dont gimme spoilers!)

I recommend going into Neuromancer with low expectations if at all possible. This may have been what made me feel like it was a lot of badly written poo.
I find I'm often overly harsh when criticizing things from memory. For example, I've said for a long time that Firefly was just another dreadful Joss Whedon super-teen wank fantasy, but I've re-watched some episodes and the dialogue is actually quite good. Still have a hard time accepting cowboys in space thing though.
Reading Foundation and some of Asimov's other books really makes you think about the kind of mind these guys had. To be able to write about something so long ago that doesn't come across like a ridiculous Flash Gordon affair. I recommend "The Gods Themselves" too, when you get a chance.

Haven't read all this thread, but I'll list off the top of my head....
- Gibson - Neuromancer
- Heinlein - Stranger in a Strange Land
- Heinlein - Time Enough for Love. (I understand that this isn't everyone's cup of tea and might not succeed as a popular movie, but I'd personally like it.)
- Banks - Use of Weapons
- Cowboy Bebop. (I haven't heard news on this lately, so hope the Keanu movie is still on track.)
I haven't read near enough scifi despite it being my "favorite" genre. There are a lot of authors I still want to read ... Ursula Lu Guin, Poul Andersen, Larry Niven, Orsen Scott Card, Roger Zelanzy...

Vincenzo Natali is planning to direct it. I hope he will.

Come on, what is wrong with the anime? Holywood will surely waste it. And Keanu as Spike? Hell no!

I'd love to see a Neuromancer movie. The worst part of the book, I think, was Gibson's dense writing that made it very hard for me to follow and understand at times. But it's a testament to its style and content that it was written by a guy with, really, little knowledge of computers, yet is still relevant today and notably lacking in a lot of the amusing anachronisms sci-fi is prone to. The story and the style are solid and would translate pretty well to film.

Allow me to recommend Flowers for Algernon. It's short and great.
