The Ur-Quan Masters (Star Control 2 remake).
Is it actually any good? And is it easy to get working?

All games are science fiction these days, or sports. Hell even Call of Duty is science fiction now.
Not true. Some of them are bog-standard by-the-numbers fantasy.

Not to encroach on your status as King Pedant Motherfucker The 1st, but Star Wars-style genre-blending aside, claiming that, say, Dark Souls is the same thing as, let's go with System Shock 2, is absolute lunacy. The difference is why I have friends who absorb anything that remotely looks like a boilerplate LOTR knockoff but shriek in horror at any technology level greater than pre-industrial. It's also why I have other friends who swear by Star Trek and comic book psychic powers but turn their noses up at anything that might look like medieval Europe.

That's really only because you have terrible friends. ZB invoking Clarke's quote was cute, though, even if it's somewhat irrelevant given the context.
Also, SubjEff: SC2 is one of the foundations of classic gaming. At least 65% of Mass Effect owes its existence directly to SC2. Your question should be beaten over the head, have weights attached to its legs, and dunked in the nearest lake.
The Ur-Quan Masters is a source port of the 3DO version to the PC, so it's rather easy to get working. You just download it. (
http://sc2.sourceforge.net/) Link.
There's an (
http://sourceforge.net/projects/urquanmastershd/) HD version in alpha that I haven't tried yet, but it looks good enough for a spin.

The dating sim pasted onto a shitty shooter with vehicle sections must have been in the remaining 35% then.

The dating sim with the shooter parts, yes. You might be amazed, but the Mako sequences were pretty much a poor 3D extrapolation of the lander bits from SC2.

if being stuck in a ludicrously atmospheric radioactive tunnel with nothing but duct-taped-together lunatics and stoic, pungent death at every turn sounds like your idea of fun, Metro: Last Light is fucking AMAZING. It's like a combination of the troglodytes from Delicatessen, Das Boot and C.H.U.D.
.... with some fairly ill-advised plastic-faced tits.

STAR CONTROL 2??It's a remake. Who knows what they've messed with?
Sulphur on 13/8/2013 at 08:53
'Remake' is poor wording. It's a source port that takes the best parts from the 3DO version and makes it digestible for current-generation PC consumption.
