Wonder where they got the idea from.

Sticking a bunch of cameras in a ball and then assembling them into a seamless panorama isn't a remarkably creative idea. It's primarily a technical challenge.
However...

The sphere is covered by 36 cameras which, once airborne, simultaneously capture individual images - these are then pieced together
in the cloud to produce a 108 megapixel image which can be explored in any direction.
Jesus christ. We've finally arrived at the point where people are referring to any and all computing activity as "the cloud".

Maybe it uploads everything to the cloud so that the company who makes it can sell a copy of every "throw" to the NSA?

has anyone ever used a scouting orb in normal gameplay?
the only times I can think of using them is in FMs where they were required for peeping into locked rooms...

I used them quite often, also for detonating mines.

I can't say that I've used one in "real" gameplay. I've messed around with them and thrown them around a few times. I just forget I have them, really.

I remember using them a lot in Framed when I first played Thief 2.
Much later, while playing FMs, I learned that you can throw them at light switches to silently turn them off from a distance.
