I have recently been unable to stop gaming and Far Cry 3 is one of the titles I have mostly enjoyed, although it has some irritating problems. At the end though, it completely put me off continuing to play.
I feel like it's trying to be edgy with all the swearing and sex references, but the dialogue gets too repetitive. There appears to be only one piece of incidental dialogue in Amanaki village, from the guy who has repeatedly discovered some figs. The pirates complain about the heat and contracting syphilis continuously, to no-one in particular.
The story isn't bad, but it appears to be pointlessly conflicted at the end. Why do I have to slit Lisa's throat to join Citra, and why would Jason do this after spending most of the game trying to save everyone? Not only that, but all Jason gets is a shag and a knife in the chest. Then you suddenly come back to life so you can explore some more. What the hell's that about? Brilliant way to break immersion...
Interesting that it killed the whole thing for me. I need things to make sense in terms of the backstory. If Citra's just killed me why would I be hanging out with Rakyat and liberating outposts?
Also couldn't they have decided whether the Rakyat were like people in Fiji or hispanic, or some random foreign sounding accent like Citra? How could Vaas be related if he talks like a hispanic criminal?
I guess it's annoying because most of the rest of the experience was pretty good - stealth options, unjamming radio towers for new weapons, crafting new stuff so you aren't a super warrior to start with, weapon tweaking with optical sights etc.
Eventually I just can't stand the inconsistency and I can't really play the game. Still, was fun while it lasted.

I got bored shortly after reaching the second island. It's installed, but I haven't touched it for ages. At some point, I'll charge through the remaining story missions.

I got very UNMILDLY annoyed with fuckin Uplay just trying to get the game to work at all
FUCK UPLAY
FUCK IT
seriously Uplay is like you have to take a huge shit but someone has put clingwrap over the toilet bowl

Yeah, it's like the other publishers are envious of Steam, so they all have their own version which you are forced to use, even if you bought through steam and it's shit. At least Steam is quite subtle about itself.

Ah yes, I forgot about the misery of UPLAY. Fuck online activation.
Steam at least is available when you need it and doesn't require you to paste keys into another site to get playing.
Windows Live is also a pain. I don't know why you have to be signed in to save your damn game in some cases. I think half the people who get cracks for games have bought them and just want to play without pointless online features.

I loved FC3 to bits. One of my favourite FPS games, but I still gotta agree with the points you make, scumble. The story is... meh. It does have some interesting characters tho. And yeah, all the NPC chatter is pretty repetetive, that's the case for many open world games though.
I've heard it said that the best way to write NPC dialogue is not to make it interesting, but rather to make it as bland and forgettable as possible. It should just be background noise, not something that sticks in your mind, since you'll be hearing it a lot.

Far Cry 3 is just the game-iest game ever made. It's well constructed, and fixes most of the mechanical problems with FC2, while at the same time lacking that atmosphere and vital spark that made the second so engaging despite the problems.

Didn't we establish in another FC3 thread that most of the plot weirdness is best explained by "Jason is kind of a douche"?

Gotta disagree there. Just look at Thief. Hours of seriously entertaining dialogue just for guards bored, making their rounds. "Hmph... what's that smell... smells like... like old meat..... Wait, that can't be me, I had a bath three days ago." The trick is just to have lots of it. But they think "Oh, these guys will all be fighting within seconds of the player arriving, we can get by with three idle sounds."

I had a real addiction to this game for a while there. While I didn't really care all that much for the story or the protagonist after a while, it was the variety and quality of gameplay, missions and exploration options within an immersive organic world that had me hooked right up until the end. I'm struggling to think of any other sandboxy game that works as well as FC3 does.
My main complaint about the game is that the save system doesn't allow me to go back and play some of my favourite missions.
