Because I didn't remember that tube from the first time i completed that mission..

That tube is definatelly there, no worries. But anyway I guess one could stack all those boulders and boxes that can be found near where you start and reach higher places. Maybe that tunnel that can be seen from starting area?

On lower difficulty levels, one can just use the elevator :)

it's a route to more loot, and is QUIET. The elevator will take you up, but alerts the Zombies.
It always has been there at all levels of difficulty.

Well, it was only a guess how paldepind could get up to the upper levels when playing the first time without entering the tunnel shown on the image, rather than suggesting it is the best possible route. However, if I recall correctly, on Expert difficulty some buttons may be missing, so the top floor can only be reached by climbing.

The tunnel can be in fact be used instead of the lift. You end up on the top floor of the mines, near the room with the holy water. The tunnel seen from the outside is an escape route that can be accessed by the top floor of the mines or the one below that.
Of course, I (being deathly afraid of pixleated zombies) take no credit in finding this. It was in the captioned "walkthrough" I watched today.
Edit: And a the buttons are there on the expert difficulty (once again, credit to the video)

I have just checked it in Thief Gold, and on Expert difficulty, the buttons for floor 3 and 4 are missing both on the second floor (where the player first enters the mines) and on the first one (the hole with the large spider) as well.

Two ways to ascend the mine shaft without using that hole (on expert). One is by stacking boulders/equipment by the starting gate and follow the mountain around to the hole you are supposed to exit the mission with Basso later. The second is to stand on the elevator of the second level and shoot a broadhead into the 3rd/4th level button of the control panel above. This last option requires accuracy but is far less time consuming.

Are you sure? I have never had any elevator alert any AI ever...
Unless if I make a jump when arriving at the top, but the elevator noise itself has never alerted anybody.

If you are unfortunate enough to arrive as one of the three Z's is near the elevator, they do check it out.

Which happens to me pretty much every time I use the lift :nono:
I find the tunnel a lot better for me, as I actually got past the mines for the first time! \o/
