It was already mentioned in the OP that you should submit your preferred genres when you sign up. (See #2).

Btw, I'm in too (PM sent). Quick question - if you accidentally try to gift someone a game they already have, will Steam warn/notify you?

I believe steam does, yes. When you select who you want to gift a game to from your list of friends it shows who already has the game. (Assuming they haven't changed that feature recently).

I'm thinking that while that's certainly a risk, it's of low probability unless people here have a LOT on GOG / GamersGate etc...
I know I have fewer than 10 games in each.

Yayaya! Hmm do we have a deadline for this (aside from, obviously, xmas)? I have some ideas for purchases but thinking of holding off until the sales start rolling in. Now, to choose something more original, or pick from the person's wishlist, hmmm!
Also I think I might have figured out who my giftee is if new friend requests are any indication -.-

Deadline is January 1st, but I think I'm gonna gift mine on the 24th of December if possible. I don't know much about gifting people on Steam who aren't in my friends list (as I only started using my account for games that aren't Counter Strike this year,) but if you're in the same TTLG group I think you can go to your friends list -> group -> invite to trade.
