Personally, I see no reason to choose a modern setting for the Thief universe or to replace Garrett with a different main character. But maybe the game could use someone or some element that already exists.:nono:
Maybe a story that runs alongside Garrett's own story, and pretty much gets involved in everything that has already happened. Maybe a story that begins where the original game begins and ends where the last game ends, but with a different storyline and different character who probably knows Garrett.
I would not go with a prequel, but a sequel is perhaps too complicated to idealize. I suggest something in the middle. Or is this idea too farfetched?:weird:

I kind of like the idea of a not-so-sequel sequel. A couple of Taffers had some great ideas regarding introducing new factions (which of course, would be planning something diabolical and ultimately Garrett would have to save the day in his usual anti-hero style). You know, kind of like picking up the story where TDS left off (and no, not with that little clepto-girl) and elaborating from there.
I don't think a prequel would work since Garrett already covers his earlier life-before-the-keepers and it didn't sound like there would be that much of a story to tell. All three games did a great job of telling Garrett's story so far, so I think a loosely based sequel would work.

Here's a crazy idea; Thief 1,2 and 3 from someone elses perspective where it is also revealed that what we thought was really going on is completely wrong.
I'd much prefer a straight sequel with good old G though. So far we've had restoring the balance from the left, the right and the inside. How about from the outside?

Now that might prove interesting SE. If done properly, of course. (And as long as it wasn't from, say, Karras' or Constantine's perspective .... ;) I really don't want to feel any sympathy for the likes of them.)

I agree with subjective effect, a sequel featuring the G man would be better, but what could work well is if the sequel involved some of the interesting elements of previous games that were not exhaustively explored. For example, Garrett would need the powers of The Eye for some reason, which would involve looking through its history, its nature, the sentient entity possessing it, its location (and stealing it), who made it (and meeting him maybe), things it had been used for in the past, its powers and effects (halucinations maybe? Seeing ghosts? Seeing past events?) and the proper procedures for handling it without risking falling prey to its influence. Admittedly though, there isn't much that has not been sufficiently covered, so such explorations should be just a small part of the sequel.
Anyway, what would be trully "pleasantly surprising" is to include a remake of TDP with the new game! The new Chronicles of Riddick included a remake of Butcher Bay, and I imagine a lot more people would appreciate a remake of TDP than BB. But then again we're hoping for them to release a decent editor, and if they do, then I imagine the community will take care of making such a remake (or a selection of the more interesting missions at least). What I would give to go down the maw of chaos again but with excellent graphics!

Garrett somehow gets on to some plot involving a time machine. Early in in the game, say mission 3 or 4, he is accidentally transported back a few centuries, using said time machine. In typical time-travel story manner, by the end of the game, Garrett founds the secret society known as the Keepers. HA!

I'd enjoy seeing some of the lost years of Garrett come to light. It seems to me that there is a sizeable gap between T2 and DS and that a ton of changes occurred during that time. It'd be interesting to check out the transitional era. As for the alternate POV of the existing timeline, while it would appeal to most of us long time taffers I think that it would be less than optimal for newbies as it would have a ton of references they wouldn't get. EM isn't going to do it, they will (probably) shoot for something that is original and innovated. Doing a "replay" is simply out of the question in such a scenario, and yes, I know it could be done well but it's just too strict a structure for them to want use it.

Another point of view isn't a bad plot source. The Half-life games did that. In Half-life, you were Gordon Freeman, one of many scientists escaping with security guards from a secret lab when all hell breaks loose. Eventually the Marines are called in to quell the situation, but they can't.
In Half-life: Opposing Force, you play as one of the Marines, and see Gordon occasionally.
If Half-life: Blue Shift, you are one of the security guards.
All three take place in the same space and time, just different points of view.

I kind of like the idea of a prequel/sequel in which the beginning of the game is set during Precursor times, and finally tells their full story--their rise and fall, leading into the first conception of The City. Then, go into a "sequel", with Garrett as the one true Keeper, who, for some reason, has to return to the Lost City and uncovers that there is a living society of actual Precursors below the great City. So many storylines (aka missions) could branch off from this.

@Chewbubba- Again, I agree that it could be done and be truly awesome but EM wouldn't see it that way. Every Thief game has been "well made but a commercial failure", or at least that's how EM will probably view things, and therefore they will want some thing that is "innovative, revolutionary, and outside the box", this means that we will probably get something outside the existing timeline so that EM can have free reign over things and can skew the plot to fit better with the new gameplay which they will undoubtedly implement. The closest T4 could come to an alternate view of events would be as a remake set in the future like Ion Storm planned on doing, really bad idea if you ask me.
