And what's with the need to insert a gay/lesbian makeout session into every episode, regardless of whether that actually supports the plot or not?
Because it's SEXY and FOR ADULTS, not that namby pamby kiddie crap like Doctor Who.

Since this is the newest Doctor Who thread, I'll just ask my question here.
Here's the thing. I've never watched the "original" Doctor Who series because they were never shown here ina my country (I knew it was somewhat of a cult SF series). Recenty they began showing the "new" episodes (the ones from 2005) along with first season of Torchwood. Since for some unknown reason they are showing it in the morning, I've only been able to watch a couple of episodes.
My question is, should I start watching it from the beginning of the "original" series or only the new series? Are the old ones as amusing as the new episodes? And what about The Sarah Jane Adventures?
Also any other british sci-fi (or something like that) series to recommend? I've watched first two seasons of Primeval, and while not that great, it was OK.

I've started watching at the Ninth (Eccelston) and I never watched the ones before, and it wasn't a problem although there are obviously references to Gallyfrey/the Time War, aliens and stuff like that which probably ring a bell for older fans.
Overall based on my own experience it's not necessary to have watched the old ones to enjoy the new ones :) I'm certainly eager to discover the older ones though, that's for certain!
As fas as Sarah Jane is concerned, it's made for kids, like Torchwood is made for adults. The plots are much simpler and it's more cartoonish. The first season was sort of fun, but I'll stick to Who/Torchwood.

Same here!
If only a certain television company hadn't been so shortsighted... :nono:

You should just go online and order the DVDs. I would recommend (like most anyone) the 4th Doctor, Tom Baker, to start off.

The Time Wars, Gallifrey and the entire Timelord civilisation being destroyed happened entirely off-screen. This was new back-story conceived for the 2005 revival.
The Time Wars would make for exciting viewing though. Too bad that Dr. Who budgets are too low to do it any justice.

If you've not seen classic Doctor Who then it's possible you've also missed out on Blake's seven. It'll look horribly dated these days, but if you can get past scenery that moves when actors get too close then it's worth checking out.
There are many other British classics (hitchhikers, red dwarf, the prisoner etc.) but I'm sure that wherever you are that you've seen them on some channel or other!

Thanks for all the replies. Guess I'll start with new episodes and then move to the older ones (there seems to be a lot of them).

Yes, Red Dwarf is one of my favorite TV shows (and the only one out of all these that has been shown here in my country), I have it on DVDs. Will check out other shows you listed.
