Hey US guys, please label the British counties. Because you know your states aren't countries right? Thus no one really cares (other than USians) which is which.
Actually, they sort of are. This isn't just some weird division of land -- each state is semi-sovereign in their own right (there's a big debate about states' rights vs. federal control that's been going on for two hundred+ years) and are largely independent from the federal government except in terms of federal funding, federal law enforcement agencies like the FBI, and other ties to the federal government. Not to mention each state has a culture and identity largely distinct from one another. Several are large enough to be their own countries outright and theoretically have a chance of making it stick.
A lot of this is due to the original 13 states all being independent colonies before uniting against British rule, and indeed for a while after the revolution there was no real coordination among the states for things like currency. That independence (and inter-state rivalry) has carried through to today.
More to the point several states are majorly important in the global economy -- New York, California, Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Massachusetts (all coastal states of course.)

You could say much the same about some counties in the UK (looking at you, cornwall).
Well, minus the bit about being large enough, or being important to any economy ever (except maybe the pasty economy).
Also, 63%, bitches. Mostly by failing horrendously in my first 15 or so guesses (my short term memory is better than my geography, I guess).

Don't make me bring back up the Scottish independence debate again.... less than a year to go :ebil:

Dethtoll, that's why US states are important to Americanians, I'm from the UK, the only thing I care about is the correct verses for God save the Queen and an uninterrupted tea & textile supply from the colonies.

Scottish Independence is a nonsense dream of a group of unrealists.

Nonsense, unrealistic, idealistic, progressive, inspiring, well documented, soundly argued, funded, democratic... but sure, yeah, you are of course correct.... don't worry yer wee heid about it... let's be honest, it is far too complex for you.
Now the question is if I am I talking about doctor who, or the right to self determination?

Attempting to further erode the Empire is folly. A lot of hyperbole, piffle and ballyhoo, what.

And this has to do with Dr Who and not a complete derailment of a thread how?
Take it elsewhere.
