Serious NON-Garrett storylines. - by 5tephe

Alright, so I know that this may cause panic, and sweaty palms, and palpitations amongst many readers here, but just like my last thread (contemplating what you could seriously do with Garrett in the story of Thief 4) I think we should give some genuine consideration to storylines that would be acceptable to the fan community if Garret were NOT to be included.
YES: I KNOW! Many of you have already stated that you will not buy the game if Garrett is not in it. That's fine.
But you know - I don't know that everyone was happy with the kind of ideas that came out of the previous thread: and personally I would rather see a well written game without Garrett, than a poorly written one with him. I don't want one of my favourite characters to go down that awful path of being wrung dry by insertion into a storyline that just doesn't wash with the world, and feels like a selling out.
So much though it dismays me, I have to admit:
Perhaps it is a NON-Garrett storyline that I would ultimately prefer.
Done well, of course.
Suggestions?

Perhaps someone from the other side of the tracks. There could be a rich youngish man or woman who has either lost their estate (and on the streets) or is close to it. If there was a takeover then all the better - it'll add to the plot. This person may have discovered they have an ability to disappear in the shadows. With a little training, they then start little thefts that grow into bigger stuff in an effort to get their wealth back - the also discover the adrenaline rush associated with theivery. Being stealthy would be key as if they are caught it would destroy their reputation. Initial quests could be to regain items they've lost because they were sold or stolen. Deeper quests to be taking revenge on the person(s) responsible for their downfall.

In general, I can respect and envision the idea. It's a matter of a perfect formula getting tampered with and the unimaginable possibility that EM will succeed in catching lightning in a bottle again. Ignoring that, and accepting there
is a possibility, the imagination is unfettered. I'd actually feel better if it didn't intersect with Garrett's timeline, though. The City has undergone too much and the game should not reference Garrett and his timeline unless the game actually blows the previous titles away. Too subjective to predict, though.

We'd rather see a game that works on all levels, including a great performance by a new actor, or not at all. If the game is bad, I won't have the displeasure of ever playing it, so I won't be upset if it sucks, just disappointed for EM, not myself.:)

I agree, rather a great game without Garrett as the protagonist, than a rubbish story with Garrett as protagonist . I ain't saying that I don't want him in, but the main protagonist could be rather the kid in the end-scene of Thief: The deadly shadows.
After all, I can think of better storylines with a diffrent protagonist than Garrett.
Obviously, in the ending-scene of Thief: The deadly shadows, they wanted the story to follow a pattern, I don't like that one, but on the other hand; then no one has to wonder how the keepers got their secret little Book, telling what happend and when, if it runs a circle :)
Anyways, do you think this could happend: All the events in Thief series are taking place in realtime, but The City has never been discoverd by anybody. The kid from ending-scene of T:DS would be the protagonist(who is no longer a kid) and Garrett has trained her(or him? lets call her/him X) to be a artistic sneak as himself.
After a few jobs that Garrett has gave to X, a bunch of explorers from the modern side of the world discovers The City and relize how outdated the place is. Garrett overhears their conversation about telling the world about the place and making a living museum from The City and making money from it. Garrett starts to relize that they are up to no good, when their leaving The City, he sends the X to follow up on them, saying that he is too old for these games, but this would be a good job for you as we are Keepers and we have to take care of this City.
X follows them through the WoodsieLord forests. I can't think of more, but maybe X would sneak in to their ship and been taken to USA military base or somewhere where X discovers all the modern world. X has to stop these people from coming back somehow, but still X has to get back to The City somehow. Now you would get to play on Garrett, he finds a ripped page from an old Keeper Annal from the Sealed Areas Keeper Compound, that has information about this kind of strangers, and that they have technology that has not been seen never in The City, and that the same people are responsible for desroying the Old Quarters. Then Garrett finds old notes made by keeper Lukas that say that these people are eventually going to find The City again and when they do, they will destroy The City. (idk why) Only the one in the prophecies can stop them, and will be destroyed at the same time.
Then somehow Garrett has to stop them from leaving The City and starts by trying to find X, while in the Forests, he meets the Ghost Of Keeper Artemus,
who tells that X is left the city.
Somehow Garrett stops them and gets killed himself also, and then X is the last Keeper alive.
So Do you think this could happend?
Because I seriously doupt it :D

I think the nobleman idea is good. With some crossovers with Garrett in whatever role the developors envision him.
eg, a the nobleman gets further drawn into thievery, perhaps he finds an old hideout used by Garrett, or you catch Garrett watching the player at some point during the game, with perhaps the plot climaxing in the noblemans actions effecting the city and Garrett being involved in some keepery way.
After all, it is Garretts job to know everything that goes on in the city, you could make a whole other trilogy of games where Garrett is a very background charachter with motives of his own that the player can only guess at and piece together through text (just like a lot must be pieced together in thief 1-3 through clues and text) as a kind of sub plot that is integrated into the overall new trilogy story arch.

EM should hire Digi, then, or throw him a bone for the IP.:p

That, mam', is hysterical.
But see: that's what I'm saying.
T2X was a fantastic game, despite the absence of Garret (in all but one flashing scene). Introduction of a new organisation, a new setting, and tying in with several elements of the City that we already know about (without demanding prior knowledge in the players) all worked very well to bring us a world and cannon expanding gaming experience.
That was why it was so accepted by us fans, and so lauded critically as a game in its own right.
That's what Eidos Montreal should bear in mind when making this new game.

... wasn't talking about T2X.
